When it comes to the relationship between Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni, the reports would flow like anywhere and everywhere from different perspectives. However, it all became clear like a crystal, at least for now, after India won the T20 World Cup trophy for a record third time with a monumental victory over New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday.
MS Dhoni, who led India to win the T20 World Cup back in 2007, was in the stands cheering for India during the T20 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai and the final in Ahmedabad. He even walked out in the middle alongside Rohit Sharma with the trophy in hand just before the final began.
However, the topic of discussion became what Dhoni did after India’s historic triumph, and Gambhir made it even more interesting with a gesture which brought both of their fans together.
MS Dhoni Mentions Gambhir; India Coach Responds
Dhoni is not an individual who is known for being active on social media. He came on Instagram once in a while, and Sunday was one of those days to congratulate the Indian cricket team. To make it more interesting and engaging, a part of the caption of his post read, “Coach Sahab, smile looks great on you, intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done.”

Needless to say, it was for Gautam Gambhir, and the Indian head coach did not miss a chance to reply to him back there. He commented under the post, “And what a reason to smile, great seeing u!”
Earlier, Dhoni was seen stopping his wife, Sakshi, for a celebration, which did not make much sense during the T20 World Cup semi-final. Nevertheless, his act after the T20 World Cup final caught more attention than the previous one, and it was Gambhir who made it look even better.
MS Dhoni To Be In Action During IPL 2026
While Gambhir will be on a well-deserved break for a while now, MS Dhoni, even at the age of 44, will be in action two and a half weeks later, when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be in action during IPL 2026. Dhoni is still going strong in the league where he began his journey back in 2008, with the Yellow Army only.
In between, MS Dhoni played for Rising Pune Supergiant when the CSK was banned from IPL. Throughout the years, he has played 278 IPL matches and tallied 5439 runs at a strike rate of 137.45, averaging 38.30.
MS Dhoni’s best IPL seasons came in 2018 and 2019, when he averaged 75.83 and 83.20, respectively. There, he made 455 runs and 416 runs, with the better strike rate (150+) coming in 2018.
