The fear of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appears to have worked on India A players.

After captain Tilak Varma and young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were involved in a fiery exchange with the umpires and with the Sri Lanka A players last week, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia issued an indirect warning to the Indian team to focus on their game instead.

The final between the two sides, as played out on Sunday, June 21 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, turned out to be a one-sided affair in favour of the visitors.

However, what unfolded in Dambulla was a far cry from the fiery encounter a few days earlier, with both Indian and Sri Lanka players keeping their emotions firmly in check from start to finish.

India vs Sri Lanka A final devoid of any controversy after BCCI warning

Much to everybody’s surprise, the final match of the ‘A team’ tri-series between India and Sri Lanka went ahead without any controversy on Sunday, June 21 in Dambulla. Players from both sides appeared to have treated each other with respect.

Moreover, both camps also shook hands with each other after the match, something that served as a refreshing contrast to the tensions that had simmered between the two sides last week.

India A opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as well as captain Tilak Varma among others all seem to have gotten along with their Sri Lankan counterparts to mark a rare moment of friendship in an otherwise difficult phase.

Notably, just a few days ago, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the India vs Sri Lanka controversy from last week by urging the ‘Men in Blue’ players to focus on the game.

While speaking to the Times of India just a day after their controversial league fixture, Saikia said: “India A is playing a major tournament, all the upcoming players who can stake their claim for the Indian senior team, they are in the midst of a very big tournament, a tri-nation series, so they should concentrate on their game rather than getting distracted from any collateral issues.”

What happened in India vs Sri Lanka A match last week?

The India A vs Sri Lanka A match in Dambulla resulted in a thrilling tie between the two sides. Moments after the result, India A skipper Tilak Varma argued with the two on-field umpires to carry on with the ‘Super Over’

Even though the umpires appeared reluctant owing to the bad light at the venue, they agreed to Varma’s request for a tie-breaker.

The decision backfired for the Indian team as Sri Lanka A won the Super Over by seven runs, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi failing to take his side home. When the 15-year-old was making his way to the dugout, he was reportedly provoked by a couple of Sri Lanka A players.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stormed back to the crease and had a fiery verbal and physical exchange with the Sri Lankan players before getting intervened by senior pro Niroshan Dickwella.

Their altercation was met with a slew of criticism from fans online, with match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash imposing a sanction on Sri Lanka A batting all-rounder Vishen Halambage.

Why keeping emotions in check is important for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Vaibhav Sooyavanshi, aged 15, recently earned his maiden call up to the Indian team for the upcoming T20I series in Ireland and England. The youngster earned his spot following his IPL 2026 riches for the Rajasthan Royals franchise.

At such a stage in his career, the last thing Sooryavanshi would want is to make headlines for the wrong reasons, especially with a place in the Indian setup now firmly within his reach.

India crush Sri Lanka A to lift tri-series title

India A batted first and mounted 377-9 from 50 overs. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi top-scored in the innings by slapping a thunderous 29-ball 94 at the top.

Captain Tilak Varma also composed a regal half-century, while Anukul Roy blasted 39 from just 15 to turbo-charge the India A innings at the death.

In response, three wickets each from Yash Thakur and Vipraj Nigam helped India A skittle Sri Lanka for just 311 to secure a comprehensive 66-run win to lift the tri-series title. Fittingly, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his batting heroics.
