BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has issued a stern order to India A players following Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s on-field spat with Sri Lanka A players in Dambulla. The BCCI official has urged the entire team to “concentrate on their game” instead of getting distracted from collateral issues.
It is worth noting that both Sooryavanshi and India A captain Tilak Varma found themselves in troubled waters for their unwanted interactions with the rival camp and with the umpires respectively.
Devajit Saikia issues statement for India A team
While speaking with the Times of India on Tuesday, June 16, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia advised the entire India A team to focus on their game amid the ongoing tri-nation 2026 series in Sri Lanka.
Without pointing out the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi incident, Saikia urged all India A players to not get distracted from any “collateral issues”.
He said “India A is playing a major tournament, all the upcoming players who can stake their claim for the Indian senior team, they are in the midst of a very big tournament, a tri-nation series, so they should concentrate on their game rather than getting distracted from any collateral issues.”

Saikia added “They should not focus on that, they should concentrate on their game and they should give their best performance so that India can come out with a victory in the tri-nation series. That is our only concern now.”
When asked if he or anyone else from the BCCI has spoken with Sooryavanshi regarding his verbal and physical face-off with the Sri Lanka A players, he said “It is not our duty to speak to the players for any reason. The players are only concentrated with their games and the support staff and the coaches who are present with them, nothing else.”

Moreover, the footage of their altercation even shows the Rajasthan Royals opener shoving Vishen Halambage before getting intervened by others.
The footage also suggests that Vishen as well as Wanuja Sahan were abusing the Indian batters when they were making their way towards the dugout after the match.
India A lose self-demanded Super Over duel with Sri Lanka, fall to the brink
The controversy involving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not the only ugly incident that took place in Dambulla during the India A vs Sri Lanka A tri-series match. India A captain Tilak Varma also argued with the umpires to carry on with a Super Over after the tied result, even though the umpires appeared hesitant owing to bad light at the venue.
The decision backfired for the India A team, as Sri Lanka ended up winning a thrilling Super Over against Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge. With two defeats in three games, Tilak Varma and co. will now face Afghanistan A in a must-win game on June 17 in Dambulla.
