In a significant development, the ECB has announced the England Test squad vs Pakistan. A 16-member squad has been named for the first two Tests of the upcoming three-match home series against Pakistan. 

The opening Test will begin at Headingley in Leeds on August 19, while the second match will be played at Lord’s from August 27. The final Test of the series is scheduled to take place at Edgbaston from September 9. 

Experienced players Ollie Pope, Brydon Carse and Dan Lawrence have returned to the England Test squad vs Pakistan. However, young all-rounder Jacob Bethell will miss the series due to a knee injury.

Jacob Bethell Ruled Out, England recall Lawrence, Pope for Pakistan series

England have suffered a setback, with Jacob Bethell ruled out of all three Tests against Pakistan because of a knee injury. It is vital to note that earlier Bethell was also ruled out of The Hundred 2026. 

The biggest talking point of the selection is the return of Dan Lawrence and Ollie Pope to the England Test squad vs Pakistan. 

Lawrence has earned a recall after two years following a blockbuster domestic season. The Surrey batter has been in excellent form during the County Championship season and has made 788 runs in 13 innings at a strike-rate of 80.41 and 65.67.

Fast bowler Sam Cook has also been recalled after making his Test debut against Zimbabwe last year.

England Men National Selector, Marcus North, said - "We have selected a squad for the first two Tests that balances rising talent with the experience needed against a quality Pakistan team.

"Dan Lawrence returns following an exceptional season so far with Surrey and we believe he has the right level of experience, maturity and skill to complement our middle order.

"Jordan Cox is well regarded as one of the most exciting talents in English cricket and will have the opportunity to bat at three in place of Jacob Bethell, who sadly misses this series through injury."

Who Can Fill Ben Stokes' Void In England Playing XI vs PAK?

With Ben Stokes retired from international cricket, it would be interesting to see how England can fill his void.

It is worth noting that the ECB has not picked a direct replacement for Ben Stokes in the England Test squad vs Pakistan. Instead, they have made a few changes to the batting order. Dan Lawrence is expected to bat at no. 6 and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith is likely to move down to no. 7. This change gives the batting line-up more balance.

Brydon Carse, as a fast-bowling all-rounder, can contribute with both bat and ball, making him a valuable option even though he is not a direct replacement for Stokes.

Why Is the Pakistan Test Series Important For England?

It is important to note that the ENG vs PAK Test series will also mark the beginning of a new era for England’s Test team.

Joe Root returns as the full-time Test captain after previously stepping down from the role in 2022. Meanwhile, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach for the Pakistan series.

Newly appointed Test coach Stephen Fleming will officially begin his role later this year when England travel to South Africa.

With a fresh leadership group, returning players and an important World Test Championship campaign ahead, England will hope to make a strong start when the first Test gets underway in Leeds on August 19.
