Team India under the leadership of Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir is all set to begin a challenging Test tour of Sri Lanka, with the two-match series starting on August 15, 2026.
After a disappointing run in Test cricket under head coach Gautam Gambhir recently, the team needs positive results to stay alive in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final race.
It is important to mention that before the opening Test in Galle, the visitors will also play a three-day practice match against a Sri Lankan XI in Colombo from August 7 to 9 to fine-tune their preparations.
Gautam Gambhir Makes Special Appeal To India Players
Ahead of the much-awaited India vs Sri Lanka Test series, Gautam Gambhir delivered a clear message to Indian players. He urged them to be completely prepared for every situation they may face during the tour.
The Indian coach also stressed that the days leading up to the first Test are just as important as the match itself. He wants the players to push themselves in training and ensure they are mentally and physically ready to deal with Sri Lanka's spin-friendly conditions.
Speaking in a video shared by the BCCI, Gambhir challenged the squad to make the most of every practice session.
"Guys, we know what’s in front of us. We know what we are playing for. We can do the volume, we can push our limits, we can tick all the boxes. Come 15th morning, whether we are batting first, or whether we are bowling first, we’re absolutely ready with every answer, every question that’s thrown at us and every answer we’re ready to give. So make sure we tick all the boxes from now on," Gambhir said.

Why Is The IND vs SL Test Series Important For Gautam Gambhir As Head Coach?
The upcoming Sri Lanka Test series is very important for head coach Gautam Gambhir. India’s recent performances in red-ball cricket have come under heavy criticism, making this tour extremely important for both the coach and the team.
Under Gambhir, India have suffered several disappointing Test results. The team's famous dominance at home ended with a 3-0 series defeat to New Zealand, followed by a 2-0 loss against South Africa on home soil.
India also endured a difficult Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where they lost the series 3-1.
These setbacks have pushed India down to 5th place in the ICC World Test Championship standings with a points percentage of 48.15.
With only a limited number of matches remaining in the cycle, India cannot afford another poor series if they hope to qualify for the WTC Final.
There is also a positive record to defend. India have not lost a Test series in Sri Lanka for the last 18 years. However, this is a new-look Indian side under captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, making the challenge even more significant.
The two-match series is expected to play a major role in deciding India’s WTC campaign and could also influence how Gambhir's tenure as Test coach is judged going forward.
Gautam Gambhir’s Stats As Head Coach In Tests
While Gambhir has guided India to major white-ball achievements, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026, his record in Test cricket has raised serious concerns.
Gambhir has guided the Indian team in 20 Test matches as head coach so far. During this period, India have managed only eight wins.
So, the upcoming IND vs SL Test series is a perfect opportunity for Gambhir to redeem himself and improve his numbers.
