In a significant development, The Hundred 2026 side Birmingham Phoenix have dealt a heavy blow. On the opening day of the sixth edition of The Hundred, England star Jacob Bethell has pulled out of the tournament.

A report from The Telegraph mentioned that Bethell, who was all set to captain Birmingham Phoenix, will not play The Hundred 2026 because of a fresh injury setback. Notably, Phoenix are yet to announce a replacement and also their new captain.

Jacob Bethell Suffers Knee Injury

The England T20I vice-captain has suffered a knee injury, which he sustained during the recently concluded ODIs against India. Notably, the 22-year-old underwent an MRI on Monday, and the ECB is awaiting the extent of the injury.

The shocking development has come on the opening day of the Hundred 2026. Notably, Birmingham Phoenix will kickstart their campaign on July 24 when they lock horns against Trent Rockets in Birmingham.

It is a possibility that Bethell might miss cricketing action even after the Hundred 2026 concludes, given the extent and grade of his injury, which means that he might even miss the Pakistan Tests, which begin on August 19.

Jacob Bethell Suffers Another Injury After IPL 2026

England’s new batting sensation seems to have a tryst with injuries. Before the knee setback, Bethell was ruled out of IPL 2026 because of a finger injury.

The 22-year-old played just 7 matches in IPL 2026, amassing 96 runs, averaging 13.71. However, the present injury setback will hurt Bethell because he was enjoying a great run with the bat.

Overall, he scored 109 runs in ODIs and 89 in 3 T20I against India. England might also miss Bethell during the Pakistan Tests which begins on August 19.

Bethell's prowess with the bat came to light during 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final where he scored unbeaten 105 (48) against India and nearly broke a billion hearts at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In the latest events, South Africa's Donovan Ferreira has been named as the new captain of Birmingham Phoenix for the Hundred 2026. Donovan is an experienced player who recently shone for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026.

Hence, the Phoenix tapped on a player who has the experience of playing franchise cricket across the globe. Talking about captaincy, then Ferreira has led Titans in South Africa's domestic circuit. 

Ferreria has also led South Africa in four T20Is, where he has won 1 matches and suffered defeats in the reamining three matches.
