Ex-England captain Kevin Pietersen has shown readiness to join the Chennai Super Kings after a fan suggested the same on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. This comes after Chennai’s ongoing struggles in the IPL 2026, which got underway on March 28.
The Chennai Super Kings lost to the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati to start their IPL 19 campaign. After that defeat, they were defeated by rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru in their third game after losing their first home game of the season to the Punjab Kings.
Fan wants Kevin Pietersen as Chennai Super Kings mentor
Chennai Super Kings are struggling with team combination and lack of impactful bowlers. With MS Dhoni out with an injury and not traveling with the team due to protocols, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is also struggling to get the right guidance as the team suffers.
Seeing their brilliant franchise, who have won five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2018, struggle to even win one match, a fan prayed to the CSK officials that they should bring in Kevin Pietersen as their mentor.

Kevin Pietersen replies to a fan's demand to join CSK as a mentor
Kevin Pietersen, who is part of the IPL 2026 tournament as a commentator, readily agreed to become the mentor of the Chennai Super Kings. His reasoning was that the southern city is closer to the Maldives, and it would be easier for him to holiday there from the Maldives.
This was a hilarious reference to his travel during IPL 2025. Pietersen was the Delhi Capitals' mentor in IPL 2025, and midway through the season, Pietersen, along with his family, went to the Maldives for a short holiday. Pietersen was mocked by his Delhi Capitals family for his short break, and even DC batter KL Rahul took sly digs at him now and then.
Kevin Pietersen and his IPL career
Pietersen was bought for a then-record US$1.5 million (currently Rs 13.95 crore) and made his Indian Premier League debut with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009. However, Pietersen's tenure was lackluster, scoring just 93 runs at an average of 15.5 in six games while taking four wickets at an economy of 6.53.
Before the 2014 IPL season, Pietersen was signed by the Delhi Daredevils in February 2014 and given the captaincy. During the 2012 IPL, which turned out to be his most successful season in the tournament, he played for DD.
His last stint in the Indian Premier League came in IPL 2016, when he was part of the Rising Pune Supergiants, where his tenure came to an end with an injury, and he didn’t appear in the Indian Premier League as a player thereafter.
He has been part of the commentary panel of the Indian Premier League for several years and was the DC mentor for IPL 2025. However, his stint as mentor lasted one season, as Pietersen quit the role due to lack of time he could commit to the franchise on full-time basis.
