England head coach Brendon McCullum has hinted that star fast bowler Jofra Archer could return for the second Test against New Zealand. The ENG vs NZ second Test will be played at the Kennington Oval in London from June 17 to June 21.
Earlier, Archer was not available for the first Test at Lord’s as he did not have enough time to recover after playing in the IPL 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals.
Since then, he has been carefully managing his workload in Barbados. Because of this, Jofra Archer is now building up his fitness with the aim of being ready for the second Test and possibly even the third match of the series.
England’s Pace Attack Dominate New Zealand At Lord’s
Even without Archer, England’s fast bowlers stepped up strongly in the first Test. The team made full use of helpful seam and swing conditions in the historic 150th Test match at Lord’s.
Ollie Robinson and Gus Atkinson were the main highlights with both taking seven wickets each. Josh Tongue also played his part by picking up five wickets. Thanks to these combined efforts, England managed to win the match comfortably and take an early lead in the series.
Brendon McCullum Hopeful About Jofra Archer’s Availability
After the win at Lord’s, McCullum gave an update on Archer’s situation and said a final call on his availability would be taken in the next few days.
"We're hopeful he will be available for the second Test; then we'll work out conditions-wise where we're at," McCullum said. "He's following a plan. We completely trust Jof. He's shown us in the past what he does, which is get himself ready based on the plans we get together and come up with. He's always turned up in the condition we wanted from him."
However, McCullum also made it clear that Archer’s selection is not certain yet. England will look closely at the pitch and match conditions at The Oval before finalising their playing XI.
In other words, even if Archer is fit, the team will only include him if the conditions suit his style of bowling.

McCullum also took time to praise other bowlers in the squad who did not feature in the first Test but have been performing well in training and domestic cricket.
"Sonny Baker was close, as well," he said. "We thought if air-speed was going to be important and the pitch was going to be flat, he would be a viable option. Fish [Fisher] has been bowling beautifully, then you've got Jofra and Brydon Carse [who has not played since breaking his hand at the IPL in March]."
With several fast bowling options available, England will have some tough decisions to make for the second Test at The Oval. The team will be aiming to go 2-0 up in the three-match series and take full control.
Jofra Archer Remains A Key Player For England
Even with competition for places, Jofra Archer is still seen as one of England’s main pacers whenever he is fit.
Notably, Jofra Archer is expected to return to England this week and could be added to the squad before training begins on Sunday. After that, the medical and coaching staff will assess his fitness before making a final decision.
Meanwhile, there is also speculation that he could make his way back into the England XI, potentially coming in as a replacement for Gus Atkinson. Atkinson, meanwhile, is likely to miss the second Test, with an investigation reportedly underway involving him and England captain Ben Stokes.
Although Archer has struggled with injuries over the years, his record in Tests remains strong. He has taken 60 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 30.10, including four five-wicket hauls.
