Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had a forgettable first outing in India A colours, scoring just 14 runs in the Tri-series opener against Sri Lanka A on June 9, 2026.

The knock came barely 72 hours after his selection in the senior India T20 squad for the Ireland and England tours, a move that had made him the youngest male player ever picked for the national team.

Opening the batting for India A after the team opted to bat, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi looked to get going early, striking three boundaries in his 12-ball stay.

However, any hopes of a trademark explosive innings were dashed when he edged left-arm seamer Mohamed Shiraz to the wicketkeeper, departing for 14 with the score on just 16.

His opening partner Prabhsimran Singh followed soon after for 2, leaving India A wobbling at 35 for 2 after 7.4 overs. 

The right-left combination that was expected to fire failed to spark, and Sooryavanshi’s 116.67 strike rate felt a world away from the breathtaking numbers he posted in IPL 2026.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Crumbled Under Weight of Expectations

Sooryavanshi’s arrival at the senior selection table was nothing short of a fairy tale. The Rajasthan Royals sensation had just finished the IPL as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and MVP, amassing 776 runs at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 237.30, including a record 72 sixes.

He also owned the Under-19 World Cup, blasting a spectacular 175 in the final to power India to the title. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had called his form “impossible to ignore” and praised his fearlessness in high-pressure moments.

With the Asian Games in Japan also on the horizon, the teenage sensation has plenty of time to turn this false start into a minor footnote.

In the ongoing Tri-series, India will next face Afghanistan A on June 11, followed by another two encounters against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan again to make their place in the Final on June 21.
