Ben Stokes and controversy follow each other hand to hand, and the England Test captain once again created a ruckus as the 35-year-old could lose his spot in the England cricket team after the latest incident. Stokes, alongside his teammate Gus Atkinson, broke team protocol and will face severe punishment from the ECB.

After winning the first Test match against New Zealand, Stokes and Atkinson took the celebration to the next level, but it ended with both players set to be axed from the England Test side, with a new captain likely to be announced soon.

What happened in the nightclub as Stokes, Atkinson create controversy

Stokes and Atkinson were at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident occurred, and it has created a major controversy.

The guard was present with the players inside the nightclub. He needed urgent medical treatment and stitches following the incident.

"Stokes and Atkinson breached the team's new midnight curfew and were embroiled in a melee with a Saracens academy player," a report in The Telegraph said.

"The Saracens player caused this and has a reputation. I would not want the England cricket captain to lose his job over this," the report quoted a source as saying.

The ECB has also released their official update, and have stated that the matter would be investigated as both players are likely to miss the second Test vs New Zealand.

List of major Ben Stokes controversies over the years

Interestingly, this is not the first time the England Test captain has been involved in a major controversy that has jeopardised his career. Here is a list of all the major controversies that Stokes has created over the last few years.

1) Obstructing the Police

A few months after his international debut, Stokes was involved in chaos as he found himself in trouble for obstructing the police during a night out in Newcastle. He was given a warning by the officials, and the matter was dealt with by County Durham.

2) Sent home from England Lions tour

In 2013, Stokes was sent back home from the Australian tour for repeated late-night drinking offences. Stokes was given a warning by the team management, but the England all-rounder ignored them.

"I would like to apologise for the way in which I acted," Stokes said. "I am determined to bounce back and I regret my actions off the field,” Stokes said.

3) Punching a locker

In his early playing days, Ben Stokes was known for losing his temper at small things, and one such incident occurred before the T20 World Cup in 2014.

In the T20I series against the West Indies before the World Cup, Stokes had a horrendous run of form, and after failing in almost all the games, the England player showcased his frustration by punching a dressing room locker, and in the process, he broke his hand.

4) Escaping driving ban

In 2016, Stokes was found guilty of overspeeding four times. The England player faced the prospect of jail time if he ever drove his vehicle more than the speed limit. Interestingly, all four instances of overspeeding occurred in the same month (June).

5) The Bristol nightclub fight

The Durham all-rounder is one of three men accused of fighting in Bristol on 25 September, 2017. He had been identified by an off-duty police officer as the “main aggressor” in a fight which left the firefighter and former nightclub bouncer Ali with a broken eye socket and blood pouring from his face.

Stokes told the jury that he had stepped in to defend two gay men who were being verbally abused, but then he had to defend himself from two men who were trying to harm him.
