England’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2026 in the semi-final clash against India has once again put the spotlight on Brendon McCullum. The defeat has sparked fresh debate, with critics questioning whether McCullum’s role as a head coach is delivering the results for England.
There have been several opinions from different figures in the cricketing world, including England captain Harry Brook, regarding the future of Brendon McCullum. However, the final decision rests with the ECB, and a recent development has already hinted at the direction the board may take.
ECB backs Brendon McCullum despite World Cup exit
England had a mixed campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026. They showed strong performances from the group stage and looked impressive in the Super 8, but their run ended in the semi-final against the mighty India, who were stronger in home conditions.
After the defeat, questions grew around the future of Brendon McCullum as England’s coach. However, a report by The Guardian on Friday revealed that the ECB still supports McCullum and he is likely to continue after a review that began following England’s recent Ashes loss.
Following the narrow semi-final defeat in Mumbai, the ECB is set to review the entire setup and its selection process, while also looking to bring more people with a strong cricket background into the system. The board will also hold talks and a T20 World Cup review with Brendon McCullum before making any official future plans.

Sri Lanka tour and T20 World Cup show positive signs for McCullum
After the Ashes debacle in Australia, England delivered encouraging performances in the T20 World Cup 2026. England won six of their eight T20 World Cup matches, reached the semi-finals, showed strong character, highlighted by a brilliant century from Jacob Bethell while chasing 254, eventually falling just seven runs short.
They also enjoyed a historic white-ball tour of Sri Lanka before the T20 World Cup, winning both the ODI and T20I series. England won five of the six matches on the tour, showing early signs of the change of approach under Brendon McCullum that had been missing in their previous tours.
All this has convinced the ECB that Brendon McCullum has brought a cultural change in the dressing room since The Ashes. There is now stricter discipline, longer practice sessions, and a better team environment, with players adapting better to alien conditions and staying calmer in tough situations, which is starting to reflect in results on the field.
Time ticking for McCullum to deliver results
Despite the recent positives, pressure is still building on Brendon McCullum to turn progress into consistent success. While there are visible improvements in England’s approach and team culture, the coming months will be crucial in determining his future with the England men's cricket team.
Importantly, McCullum continues to enjoy the support of players, including Harry Brook, who has openly backed the New Zealander. However, the ECB will ultimately judge his tenure on results, and if he remains in charge, expectations will only grow stronger.
