Under the leadership of Harry Brook, with Brendon McCullum at the helm, England managed to play some quality cricket in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, before they were knocked out of the semi-finals against India.

Till the semi-final clash, they only dropped one match in the tournament and went unbeaten in Super 8 and bounced back from the Ashes disappointment.

Following the underwhelming Ashes tour to Australia, they clinched the ODI and T20I series in Sri Lanka as well. As they head home after the T20 World Cup, Brendon McCullum, who has faced a fair bit of scrutiny over the team’s recent struggles, has opened up on his future and revealed what he would like to do in the near future.

Brendon McCullum opens up on his coaching future

On Saturday night, after England conceded the semi-final to the hosts by a small margin of 7 runs, the England head coach spoke to Sky Sports. He reviewed England’s recent performances and spoke about what the future holds for him, revealing his love for the coaching role of this set of players.

He admitted that the team should have done a lot better in the Ashes series down under, but showed pride in their white-ball performances post the Test series. For him, after such a long time on the road, it is time to take a back seat, relax for a while and reflect on the performances carefully, rather than rushing any decisions.

“Look, I love the job — I think it's a great job. It doesn't come without its challenges, of course, but that's the nature of it. I feel like we've achieved some really cool things over the last few years, but there's still so much to achieve with the side across all formats,” he said.

“I would love to carry on. We'll see what unfolds over the next little while. As you always do, when you're a player, when you're a captain and as you are as a coach, you let things land, you try and then objectively look at what is working, what isn't working, and what things you need to ensure you try and rectify,” he added.

How has England performed under McCullum?

McCullum was appoint as the England head coach in the summer of 2022 and changed the way the English side played Test cricket. As famously known as Bazball, England started playing some extravagant brand of cricket.

Since then, they have played 46 Tests, winning 26 of them and losing 18. Thanks to their style of play, only two have ended in draws. They finished the 2023-25 World Test Championship in 5th place on the table with 11 wins in 20 matches.

He was given the white-ball coaching role in January 2025, and they have won 6/18 ODIs, suffering a group stage exit in the ICC Champions Trophy. In T20Is, they have a good record under him, winning 17/26 matches and reaching the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Crucial Test summer for England

Brendon McCullum’s England will now go on a long break in international cricket, with only the IPL and PSL scheduled in the coming months. Their next international assignment is against McCullum’s home country, New Zealand, when the Kiwis will travel to England for three Tests, followed by three more against Pakistan.

Currently, they sit 7th in the WTC table, with 3 wins in 10 matches and are in desperate need of a few wins if they want to stay alive in the race for the final. They will also travel to South Africa later this year, which will be a tough away tour.

How England fares in these coming three Test series, alongside some white-ball matches against India, Sri Lanka and South Africa, will determine how long McCullum keeps his current job. Currently, he is contracted till the end of 2027 with England.
