The clock has been ticking over Brendon McCullum’s head after the harrowing Ashes defeat and England’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-final might be the last nail in the coffin.

With earlier reports swirling around the England and Wales Cricket Board pondering the replacement of Brendon McCullum, it seems like a change is set to take place anytime soon. Ahead of the lethal call for the Kiwi veteran, let’s take a look at the most suitable candidates who can replace him as England coach in the immediate future.

Brendon McCullum Replacements For England Head Coach

1) Jonathan Trott

Being one of the members of the England Lions himself, Jonathan Trott, a 52-Test match player for England cricket team who has over 3,835 runs and five wickets in the format, and 68 ODIs and 70 T20Is under his name, can be a perfect replacement for Brendon McCullum in the current setup.

Trott has shown promise with his transformative success with Afghanistan national cricket team earlier, and with his deep understanding of the future of English cricket, he can blend in quickly. Moreover, following the recent conclusion of his tenure as Afghanistan head coach, Trott has expressed his desire to lead England one day.

Why Trott, one may ask? However, the answer is simple. Trott is a proven giant killer, as under him Afghanistan evolved from underdogs into a top-tier global team. He led Afghanistan to their first-ever ICC semi-final in 2024.

After massive victories over Australia national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team, they also secured a historic first-ever ODI series win against South Africa national cricket team in 2024 under Jonathan Trott's guidance.

Alongside his coaching experience and versatility in his curriculum vitae across the franchise circuit, Trott also has deep cultural ties with the team, and he might also offer a disciplined alternative to the high-risk “bazball” approach.

2) Andrew Flintoff

If Jonathan Trott is going to dismantle the Bazball era, Andrew Flintoff, the right-handed all-rounder from England cricket team and one of the golden-era players, can pack some punch for the Bazball alignment.

As a leader in the mould of Ben Stokes, he could be the one who exactly knows when a player needs a supportive arm around the shoulder or blunt honesty. Rob Key, the England and Wales Cricket Board director, has also backed Flintoff as one of the primary candidates as a successor to McCullum.

If we look into his coaching career, Flintoff was appointed head coach of the England Lions in late 2024. As head coach of the Northern Superchargers, he led the team to a significant performance turnaround, improving their standing on the points table.

He has also served as a consultant for the senior England side during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 and the 2023 tour of West Indies.

Although he has publicly denied taking up the England coach role, his recent departure from Northern Superchargers has made him more available for a potential full-time national role.

3) Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara can be one of the premier candidates to succeed Matt Kalla because of his wide expertise, versatility, and experience in international cricket. Most widely known as one of the most technically perfect batters in history, with a Test average of over 57, Sangakkara can offer a counterbalance to the raw, baseball-like aggression.

Sangakkara has also spent seven years as the director of cricket and head coach for the Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals, where he has built a successful partnership with England's Jos Buttler.

Under his watch, he led Rajasthan Royals to the IPL final in 2022 and to the playoffs in 2024, demonstrating his ability to maintain high performance during pressure situations. As of 2026, Kumar Sangakkara is focusing on his dual responsibilities as head coach and director of cricket at Rajasthan Royals.

However, a proposal to coach the England cricket team might be an opportunity that he would like to grab with both hands.

4) Eoin Morgan

For the unaware, Eoin Morgan is the primary reason England transitioned from an outdated 2019 World Cup champion side to the fearless brand of cricket that McCullum has eventually adopted.

Arguably having one of the highest cricket IQs in the game, Morgan can be of significant help, especially to the current core consisting of Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, Jofra Archer, and others. In late 2024 and throughout 2025, Morgan explicitly ruled himself out of immediate coaching vacancies, stating that the timing was not right.

Yet this year, Morgan, who currently serves as the president of the Professional Cricketers' Association, could pick up the role to guide or even improve England's baseball-era built on his fearless leadership legacy and innovation.

5) Gary Kirsten

Gary Kirsten can be one of the elite-level coaches who could replace Brendon McCullum. He has a proven track record of leading major nations to world No. 1 rankings and global titles. Kirsten is also one of the few coaches to have led India to a World Cup title and the world No. 1 Test ranking.

Described by MS Dhoni as the 'best thing to happen to Indian cricket', Kirsten is a strong man-manager with solid relationships with Rob Key, who had previously shortlisted him for the role, specifically considering him for the Test position in 2022 before choosing McCullum for an all-formats restructure.

With Kirsten currently serving as a high-performance consultant for Namibia, it is also to be noted that he recently completed a stint as Pakistan's white-ball head coach in 2024, and he has also shown interest in coaching England since he earlier expressed that 'it would be a really lovely project to work' with.
