There have been a lot of injuries in the New Zealand camp in the past few years, and amid the hostilities, after Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra were ruled out of the India vs New Zealand ODIs, two new victims have been identified.
Devon Conway and Matt Henry are in doubt for the early stages of the India ODI series. They have reportedly suffered injuries during their training ahead of the first clash on November 4 and are in doubt for immediate participation.
Matt Henry and Devon Conway collided during training
As per New Zealand cricket, bowler Matt Henry and top-order batter Devon Conway collided with each other during their training session.
According to team captain Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway went straight to the hospital after the injury, and later, in a development from the NZ media release, he has been effectively ruled out of the India vs New Zealand 1st T20I.
“Conway was taken to A&E for further examination, which confirmed a concussion that has ruled him out of the first ODI against India tomorrow,” the NZ media release read.
Both players will continue to be monitored, and their further involvement in the ODI series will be updated in due course.
For the unaware, Matt Henry is one of the leading bowlers in the Kiwi pace department in the India ODI series, alongside Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson. Against India, he has been extremely successful, with 21 scalps from the 11 games he has participated in.
Meanwhile, Devon Conway is also one of the primary opening batters for the New Zealand team in ODIs, where he has garnered 307 runs against India in the format at an average of 34.11.
When will Henry and Conway likely return to the squad?
The reported injury effectively calls for the exclusion of the duo from the first ODI match. The duo collided while taking a catch at the training nets at Eden Park. More importantly, the players were immediately treated by medical staff on-site and received Head Injury Assessments.
With Conway ruled out of the first ODI, Matt Henry is still subject to fitness for the curtain-raiser, after being ruled out of the T20I series. Both players will remain under medical supervision, and their participation in the series will be updated as their conditions improve.
