Henry ruled out of T20I series vs India [Source: AFP]
In a significant blow to New Zealand, pacer Matt Henry has been ruled out for the remainder of the T20I series against India. Henry bowled just two overs in the second T20I before leaving the field.
Apart from Henry, pace bowler Lockie Ferguson also left the field and will not take part in the third T20I match in Wellington.
Kyle Jamieson to replace Henry in third T20I
In the latest development, according to Cricbuzz, New Zealand Cricket confirmed that fellow pacer Kyle Jamieson, who has yet to feature in the T20I series against India, will play in the third T20I. However, after the third game, Jamieson will depart to take part in the domestic ODI Cup.
That means he won’t take part in the remaining two T20I matches, but will return for the ODI leg of the tour.
“Matt Henry will remain in Christchurch and assemble with the ODI squad on November 2 in Auckland,” said New Zealand Cricket in its statement. “Lockie Ferguson will depart to Auckland today and re-join the squad for the final two T20Is at Eden Park and Seddon Park respectively.”
New Zealand missed Henry’s services as the Kiwis lost the second T20I from a winning position.
New Zealand needs Matt Henry against India in ODIs and Tests
The New Zealand management doesn’t want to take any chances with Henry, who remains their key bowler for the ongoing series against India.
The Kiwis have enough depth in their T20I attack for the remainder of the series against India, but they need Henry in the other two formats.
The right-arm seamer boasts a terrific record against India in ODIs and Tests, and the numbers speak volumes about his credentials.
In 11 ODI matches against the Men in Blue, the Kiwi pacer has bagged 21 wickets, with an average of 21.00. Moreover, the numbers get even better in red-ball cricket. In Tests, he has bagged 16 wickets in 4 Tests, with an average of 25.44 and a strike rate of 49.06.
Thus, the Kiwis are not taking any risk as they would ideally like to have Henry back in the other two formats against the Indian side.
