An attacking left-handed batsman, Devon Conway, shifted to New Zealand as an already established cricketer in the South African domestic circuit.
Born and raised in South Africa, Conway made his First-Class debut for Gauteng against Eastern Province in Johannesburg in March 2009. Conway was a prolific run-scorer in the South African domestic circuit and almost played 100 first-class matches there before shifting to New Zealand in 2017.
After he arrived in New Zealand, Conway played for the University Club and made a mark in the New Zealand domestic circuit while plying his trade for the Wellington Firebirds in the Super Smash. He had to mostly remain in the shadows of Tom Blundell in the initial years, but a call-up to the national team for Blundell paved the way for Conway to become a permanent member of the squad.
A top-order batsman, Conway relishes his opportunity to bat at the top of the order and enjoys his time in all formats of the game. His ability to adapt to different conditions and formats made him a good option for New Zealand in the coming years.
Apart from that, the prolific opener Devon Conway was a key figure in CSK’s 2023 title-winning campaign. Conway was their leading run-scorer that season with 672 runs in 16 matches.
Devon Conway T20I Career
Devon Conway, who is of South African origin, played his first T20 International for New Zealand on 27 November 2020, during the series against the West Indies.
Very soon, he proved that he has all that it takes as a solid all-format batter, batting top of the order. He scored three fifties in his first five T20I innings, including a 99 not out against Australia in Christchurch in early 2021 that set up a series win.
In the next year, Conway played a brilliant hand in the home series against Pakistan, Australia, and Bangladesh, when he played various match-winning innings to secure the fourth position on the T20I Player Rankings.
Devon Conway ODI Career
In the absence of Kane Williamson, an emerging Devon Conway made his ODI debut for New Zealand on 20th March 2021, against Bangladesh. Only 6 days late, on 26th March, in the third match of the series against Bangladesh, Conway scored his maiden ODI century.
In the 2023 ODI World Cup opener, Conway's 152 not out inflicted a nine-wicket thumping defeat on England.
Devon Conway Test Career
A year later, after establishing himself in the limited-overs sides, Devon Conway was landing at the Lord’s to make his Test debut for New Zealand. On 2 June 2021, he started his career with a double century on his Test debut.
Conway's score of 200 was the highest score by a men's Test debutant in England. At the age of 29 years and 329 days, Conway also became the oldest batsman to score a double century on his Test debut. Later in the series, he scored an 80 and ended with a tally of 306 runs to bag the Man of the Series award.
Later, he became an integral part of the team that clinched the maiden World Test Championship 2019–21 mace.
Just a year later, in December 2022, during the 1st Test against Pakistan, Conway scored 92 runs and became the fastest New Zealand batter to complete 1000 runs in Tests in 19 innings.
