Maxwell announces retirement [Source: X]
In a shocking update, Australia all-rounder and star cricketer Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket. The cricketer last played a match for the national team back in February 2026, representing Australia in the T20 World Cup.
At 38 years old, Glenn Maxwell decided to step down from his international commitments while remaining active in the domestic circuit. He is a regular performer in overseas leagues and Australia's Big Bash League and would continue to participate in those tournaments.
Glenn Maxwell bids adieu to international cricket after 14 glorious years
Maxwell made his international debut back in 2012 in the ODI and T20I formats, given his impressive form in List A and domestic T20 tournaments. After amassing 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 runs in the T20 format, and having played 286 international cricket matches, Maxwell has stepped down from the game.
Currently taking an interest in golf after a sizzling performance in the ETPL, the cricketer hasn’t revealed an official statement regarding his decision yet. However, it is likely that the management has slowly turned its back on the player after a series of poor performances in the last two years.
Notably, in 2026, he scored 62 runs in T20Is, while in 2025, he managed only 40 runs from four matches in ODIs. His all-round performances also failed to give him enough credibility to earn some room in the Playing XI in the series of games after February this year.
What’s next for Glenn Maxwell?
Glenn Maxwell last featured in the Australia One Day Cup, representing Victoria, and in franchise cricket, he last played for Belfast Wolves, leading the team in ETPL 2026. From 12 innings, he scored 245 runs at an average of 27.22. To give him some credit, he also bagged eight wickets with the ball in the same tournament.
As for his future in cricket, Maxwell is signed to a two-year deal with Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. He will also be seen in the Pakistan Super League, representing Hyderabad Kingsmen. Maxwell will also feature in the Caribbean Premier League, ETPL’s upcoming season, and Major League Cricket as well.
