In a massive recent development, Brendon McCullum, the ex-coach of the England Test cricket team, has opened up about his snub from the role. Just a day after being terminated from a position he held since 2022, McCullum has poured his heart out in his recent official statement.
Notably, McCullum is currently continuing as the white-ball coach of the team and will guide the side with his responsibilities limited only to red-ball cricket. Confirming the earlier report, McCullum stated his exit as England's head coach for the Test team and also revealed details behind the decision.
Brendon McCullum reveals reason behind Test setup exit
The mammoth scale of blame that falls on McCullum’s part is especially for the India and England test series that ended in a draw and the other ended in utter 4-1 humiliation, respectively.
Referring to those two series, McCullum has apologised to the fans of England cricket for being unable to keep up with the expectations.
“Fundamentally, we just weren’t quite able to win those two marquee series. We weren’t able to get the results in those, and for that I guess I can only say sorry,” Brendon McCullum shared in an official statement.

Further, Brendon confirmed the stance that he was sacked from his role instead of him willingly stepping down as the head coach of the England Test team.
“I got a tap on the shoulder, and obviously I am disappointed,” he said months after he was confident with his role to continue as all-format coach even after the Ashes 2025-26 defeat.
“But at the same time, I fully respect the decision. We’re in a results business, and our results weren’t good enough. It’s time for someone else to have a go,” he added.
Brendon McCullum positive about England’s white-ball future
Speaking about his coaching philosophy, McCullum elaborated on how he intended to help the team and build on their strengths.
“My method is about trying to build an environment where people are able to be the best versions of themselves, so they can handle the pressure moments when they’re at their highest. We didn’t always get it right, and I accept that,” Brendon shared.
With the ODI World Cup last won by England in 2019, McCullum, the current white-ball coach, was overenthusiastic in his statement as the team eyes a trophy in the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I’ve got the enthusiasm for it. With the World Cup not too far away, we’ve got an opportunity to get ourselves in a position where we’re a realistic chance of lifting the trophy,” McCullum concluded.
What is McCullum's track record as England's Test coach?
McCullum cannot be called a very successful coach for the England Test setup given the team’s performances under the ‘Bazball’ era. Except for some extraordinary wins, England played 49 Test matches under Brendon McCullum and managed to win 27 out of them, having a win percentage of 55%.
The last Test win of England came in May 2025 when Zimbabwe visited the country, and the Three Lions emerged victorious in the sole Test played. Following that, Ben Stokes’ men drew the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2, lost The Ashes and also lost the recently concluded Crowe-Thorpe Trophy 1-3, which also marked the end of Ben Stokes’ international career.
