Lahore Qalandars have revealed their squad for the 2026 Global Super League in Guyana, and the most significant change is the removal of Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain.

The franchise has not yet named a new leader, while former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait will serve as head coach. Afridi, who guided Qalandars to three Pakistan Super League titles, is absent from the 14-man group.

Meanwhile, the pace spearhead has signed with another franchise as the Pakistan team has ignored him for the upcoming international series, while also sabotaging his overseas commitments.

Lahore Qalandars GSL 2026 full squad announced

The Qalandars have confirmed a 14-player squad for the third edition of the Global Super League.

The captaincy remains undecided. Shaun Tait takes charge as head coach. The team begins its campaign against the Perth Scorchers on 23 July in Providence.

Four other franchises, Desert Vipers, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Perth Scorchers, and San Francisco Unicorns, complete in the prestigious five-team tournament.

Shaheen Afridi’s tenure as Qalandars captain

Shaheen Afridi’s time as Qalandars skipper was brought to a halt ahead of the Global Super League. He led the franchise with distinction in the PSL, securing three titles and building a legacy as one of the competition’s most successful leaders.

Across 94 PSL matches, he collected 138 wickets at an economy of 7.96. In the most recent PSL season, he claimed 16 wickets in 10 innings while going at 7.86.

Despite that record, the Qalandars have opted for a fresh leadership direction, although the clear reason behind Shaheen Afridi’s removal has not been revealed yet. The new captain has not been named, leaving the squad without a confirmed on-field figurehead as the tournament approaches.

Afridi is yet to get an NOC from PCB

Shaheen Afridi has officially joined Kandy Royals for the Lanka Premier League 2026, which begins on 17 July. However, the PCB recently issued No Objection Certificates to several players for The Hundred, LPL 2026, CPL 2026, and the Global Super League. Afridi’s name was missing from that initial list.

He is not part of Pakistan’s squad for the two-Test series against West Indies, so he is expected to receive the required clearance in the coming days. Once the NOC arrives, he will feature for Kandy Royals alongside other Sri Lankan stars.

Did Lahore Qalandars play in the Global Super League earlier?

For the unaware, the Lahore Qalandars took part in the inaugural Global Super League in 2024, held across November and December in Guyana. Carlos Brathwaite captained the side in that edition.

Qalandars recorded wins against Hampshire and Victoria but fell to Guyana Amazon Warriors and Rangpur Riders and got eliminated early.

Meanwhile, Rangpur went on to lift the trophy in the 2024 edition, defeating Victoria. The 2026 tournament marks Qalandars’ return to the competition, once again hosted entirely at Providence Stadium in Providence, Guyana.
