Brendon McCullum bids goodbye to the Test whites of England and will continue as the white-ball coach. Although the ‘Bazball’ aka Brendon McCullum era ends for England, under which some aggressive side of the rather classical English side was seen, there have been some matches which instilled the prominence of the coaching style of McCullum.

The Kiwi explosive batter, who himself always relied on fast-paced attacking with the bat, had England follow his principles under captain Ben Stokes. As Stokes stepped down and McCullum also was snubbed from his role, here’s a look at some of the best Test matches England played under the ‘Bazball’ era.

5 Best Bazball Performances Etched In History

5) vs New Zealand in 2022

Under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, England produced one of the greatest fourth-innings chases at Trent Bridge. After conceding 553 in New Zealand's first innings, England refused to play for a draw, replying with a rapid 539 led by centuries from Joe Root and Ollie Pope.

Set 299 to win on the final day, England stunned New Zealand with an ultra-aggressive approach that perfectly captured the birth of Bazball.

Jonny Bairstow smashed a breathtaking 136 off just 92 balls, while Stokes remained unbeaten on 75, instructing Bairstow to “hit it into the stands!" as the hosts chased down the target in only 50 overs.

McCullum's fearless philosophy transformed a difficult chase into a statement victory, announcing England's new era in unforgettable fashion.

4) vs India in 2024

England's victory in Hyderabad remains one of the defining moments of the Bazball era. Despite conceding a huge 190-run first-innings lead, Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum never abandoned their attacking philosophy.

Ollie Pope produced one of the greatest overseas Test innings by an England batter, scoring a magnificent 196 on a turning pitch where survival itself was difficult.

His fearless use of the reverse sweep and positive intent completely shifted the momentum. Stokes' aggressive captaincy and unwavering faith in debutant spinner Tom Hartley also proved decisive.

After an expensive first innings, Hartley responded brilliantly with a match-winning 7/62 in India's second innings, sealing a famous 28-run victory and showcasing England's fearless brand of Test cricket at its best.

3) vs India in 2022

England produced one of the greatest wins of the Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum era by chasing 378 against India at Edgbaston in 2022. After conceding a first-innings lead and facing a daunting fourth-innings target, England refused to retreat from their attacking approach.

Jonny Bairstow's breathtaking 114 and Joe Root's unbeaten 142 turned the chase into a masterclass in fearless batting, with the pair adding an unbroken 269-run stand.

Earlier, Bairstow had also scored a century in the first innings to keep England in the contest. Guided by McCullum's aggressive philosophy, England trusted positive intent over caution, completed their highest successful Test chase and levelled the series 2-2.

2) vs Pakistan in 2022

Ben Stokes' first overseas Test as England captain became a defining moment of the new era under Brendon McCullum. Despite a viral illness sweeping through the squad before the match, England stuck firmly to their fearless approach.

After winning the toss, the visitors launched an extraordinary batting assault, racing to 506/4 on the opening day as Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook all scored centuries.

That relentless scoring rate created enough time to force a result on a lifeless Rawalpindi pitch that seemed destined for a draw. Stokes then made a bold declaration and captained aggressively, using imaginative field placements and clever bowling changes to keep Pakistan under constant pressure.

England eventually sealed a dramatic victory in the final session on day five, proving that positive cricket could produce results even in the most batter-friendly conditions.

1) vs Australia in 2023

The 2023 Ashes became the first real setback for England's ultra-aggressive style under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. After falling 2-0 behind, costly tactical decisions and rushed batting left them with too much ground to recover.

Even so, England never abandoned their attacking philosophy or belief in their methods. Mark Wood's fiery return transformed the bowling attack as he claimed five wickets in Australia's first innings, while Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad provided excellent support.

Despite Pat Cummins' six-for restricting England's first-innings total, the hosts dismissed Australia for 224 to set a target of 251. Harry Brook anchored the chase with a composed 75 before Chris Woakes and Mark Wood held their nerve in an unbeaten partnership to seal a thrilling three-wicket victory.
