Will the Lord’s ODI game on Sunday be Rohit Sharma’s farewell game in the Indian jersey? This has been a question raised over the last two days. While no official confirmation has come from Rohit Sharma’s side as of yet, all signs point to his last-ever India game in the third ODI against England at the Mecca of Cricket.

According to The Indian Express, the BCCI selectors have conveyed to Rohit that the legendary batter is no longer part of their squad for the 2027 World Cup. The Indian opener has expressed frustration over the decision, and reportedly, he’ll step onto the field for the last time on Sunday afternoon.

BCCI Secretary releases statement on Rohit Sharma's ODI future

With all the rumours circulating regarding Rohit’s potential sacking from the ODIs, the BCCI Secretary, Devajit Saikia, released his official statement as he addressed the ongoing speculation regarding the future of one of the greats of the game.

"There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma's future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord's ODI wont be his last match," Saikia told PTI.

Even though the BCCI Secretary has given his final verdict on Rohit’s ODI future, but here is the catch: the BCCI doesn’t decide till when you are on the scheme of things. Selectors, Captain, and Coach decide.

Why BCCI wants to remove Rohit from the ODI scheme of things?

As mentioned in the Indian Express Report, the selectors have decided to move on from Rohit, as Yashasvi Jaiswal, the left-handed youngster, is waiting in the wings, and the selectors want to try him out alongside Shubman Gill at the top.

Moreover, there are other issues pertaining to Rohit’s future, and one major factor is his recent injury track record.

The 39-year-old was injured during the IPL 2026 season, and by the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, the former India captain would be 41, and the selectors are concerned about his fitness issues.

Rohit’s ODI numbers have also taken a hit in 2026, and hence, the selectors are planning to remove him from the ODI plans.

Rohit's average ODI numbers in 2026

Rohit’s ODI numbers have taken a massive hit in 2026 as he no longer possesses the same hand-eye coordination that he once had.

In 14 ODI matches in 2025, the 39-year-old batter amassed 650 runs, with a strike rate of 100, and an average of 50. However, 2026 witnessed a stark contrast as the numbers dipped massively.

The Indian opener has played eight ODI games this year and has only registered 241 runs, with an average of 30.13, and a strike rate of 88.60.

The legendary batter has been a pale shadow of his former self in the ongoing ODI series against England. In the first ODI, he could only score 11 off 21 balls, and in the second game, the opener struggled as he only added 26 off 47 balls.
