There is no denying that Shubman Gill has been going through a stellar run of form, and it was evident during the India vs England 1st ODI at Birmingham. His crucial fifty was the key to India’s victory against the English side before the batter was retired hurt.
He continued the purple patch in the second IND Vs ENG ODI in Cardiff before Ben Duckett took a blinder at short cover to dismiss the Indian batter. What’s the first thing a batter does when he gets dismissed? He gets frustrated with himself, and the same thing happened with Gill as he swore at himself by remembering Ben Stokes.
Gill remembers Stokes after getting out in IND Vs ENG 2nd ODI
The Indian ODI captain was looking in sublime touch as he quickly raced away to 31 off 30, and was looking in pristine form. However, one bad shot, and the right-handed batter was sent packing. He drove a fuller-length ball outside the off with full flow, but Ben Duckett took a sharp catch to end Gill’s innings.
The skipper was left frustrated, as he walked back to the pavilion in anger, and in the heat of the moment, he swore at himself by remembering the word “Ben Stokes”, which has become a long-running joke. When Indian players are angry with themselves, they utter a Hindi curse word, which resembles Stokes’ name.
Stokes himself has leaned into the joke, once famously tweeting, "Ben Stokes' if you know you know" in response to an article about Virat Kohli.
Why Gill was angry with himself?
Gill has played plenty of cricket at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, and he knows the venue at the back of his hand. On a tricky surface, the Indian ODI captain had given his team a solid start as India aimed for a big total.

The right-handed batter himself played an attacking brand of cricket as he raced away into the 30s, and was looking for a big score. The ball that got rid of him wasn’t the best of the lot, and Gill had timed the ball to perfection.
But as it often happens, sometimes the best balls don’t fetch you a wicket, but a loose ball does, and that’s exactly what happened as the fielder took a stunner to dismiss him, and this made Gill angry at himself.
As a result, he took all the anger on himself for not being able to clear the field and play a longer innings in the IND Vs ENG 2nd ODI.
