Rohit Sharma likely carrying a serious injury [Source: AFP]
Rohit Sharma is reportedly carrying a serious hamstring injury problem, despite his apparent recovery ahead of India’s three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
The legendary opener also missed a handful of Mumbai Indians matches during the recently-concluded IPL 2026 season owing to a hamstring injury he sustained against the RCB.
However, it appears that the cricketer may not have attained full recovery even though he was selected in the national squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan at home.
Rohit Sharma not completely fit, scans show hamstring tear
As reported by CricBlogger, Rohit Sharma is not completely fit and a recent scan indicates that the cricketer has a Grade 3 hamstring tear with a 16-mm injury.

However, neither the 39-year-old batter nor the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed the exact nature of the injury.
With an official update still pending, it is imperative that the senior batter is treated with caution and gets his workload managed, if the aforementioned hamstring reports hold any weight.
Impact of Grade 3 hamstring tear in the long run
A grade 3 hamstring tear is generally considered to be one of the most severe forms of hamstring injury. It largely involves a complete tear if the muscle or tendon and often results in severe pain.
The timeline for the recovery from this injury also varies from player to player, depending upon age factors and fitness levels.
In case of Rohit Sharma, who recently turned 39, the cricketer needs to be carefully managed by both, Team India and the Mumbai Indians franchise if he truly aims to play the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year.
Even though Rohit is only playing ODIs for Team India after his retirements from Tests and T20Is, one can expect the cricketer to miss quite a few matches in India’s road towards the ODI spectacle between October and November in 2027.
Rohit Sharma continues to struggle with form issues
The former Indian captain is also undergoing a major dip in form with the bat. In the recently-concluded IPL 2026 season for the Mumbai Indians franchise, the right-hander aggregated just 283 runs in nine innings, scoring just two half-centuries in the process.
Moreover, in his final four matches of the tournament, he minted only 62 runs in four innings at a dismal average of 15.75.
In the series-opening first ODI match against Afghanistan in Dharamshala last weekend, he made a sluggish 16 during his 46-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill in a chase of 195 from 25 overs.
As of now, it remains to be seen if the team management continues to persist with the 39-year-old in the Indian playing XI amid his form and injury concern.
Team India will now face Afghanistan in the second ODI of their three-match series at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The match will be played on Wednesday, June 17.
