Rohit Sharma will likely be making his retirement from international cricket after India’s upcoming third ODI of the series against England. As per reports, the cricketer has decided to retire after getting informed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he is no longer in their plans for next year’s 2027 ICC World Cup.
The BCCI, however, is not apparently happy with the fact that the news of his potential retirement got leaked to the media. It is believed that the Indian board had sent out a confidential note to the selectors about Sharma’s World Cup fate, and urged them to not speak to any media person regarding the matter.
With news eventually leaking out, the BCCI will likely be taking action against the selectors.
Rohit Sharma’s retirement leak angers BCCI
As reported by cricbuzz, the BCCI is not pleased with the fact that the news of Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement was leaked to the press. The information was believed to be sent out to the Indian selectors in confidence, urging them to not speak to the media for the time being.
It remains a likely scenario that the BCCI wanted to create a narrative that involved Sharma bowing out of the game on his own terms.

However, the leak pretty much indicates that the former Indian captain is now been pressurized to announce his international retirement following his two listless outings against England in the ongoing ODI series.
It is worth noting that over the past couple of years, Sharma has repeatedly expressed his desire in playing for India till the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe next year. The legendary opener wants to lift the World Cup crown once in his career, after coming agonizingly close in the previous edition back in November 2023.
Why is Rohit Sharma not in BCCI plans for World Cup 2027?
As reported by Indian Express in between India’s second ODI of the series against England on July 16, Rohit Sharma was informed by the BCCI that he is no longer in their plans for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
The report further stated that both, the BCCI and the Indian selectors want to nurture some young Indian opener like Yashasvi Jaiswal instead, who has demonstrated remarkable promise in his short 50-overs career so far.
While Rohit has served as India’s opener in the past three World Cup editions, the upper brass of Indian cricket reportedly wants Jaiswal to open the innings for the national side along with captain Shubman Gill in South Africa next year.

Regardless, the former Indian captain has invited his parents to London to be with him for the impending India vs England third ODI.
Rohit Sharma’s farewell will be hosted by the iconic Lord’s in London on Sunday, July 19, and it also happens to be the series decider between the two sides.
