The Test match format came into existence over a century ago in 1877. It has been the most prestigious and longest-standing form of cricket that has shaped the sport into the glorious stage it is today.
Today, there are 12 nations with Test status competing against each other. However, when the format first made its debut, only a handful of teams were eligible to play officially.
Over the last century, a lot of Test cricket was played across the globe, but a few teams prioritised the format more and eventually ended up playing tons of games. Team India has been one of those sides, and the Galle Test against Sri Lanka marked its 600th appearance in the format.
However, despite featuring in 600 matches, India are not in the top two among teams with the most Test matches. On that note, let’s look at five teams with the most Test matches played in cricket history.
5. New Zealand - 487
New Zealand received their Test status in 1930. Since then, they’ve played a total of 487 Test matches, winning 126 while losing 190 games.
Their win/loss percentage stands at 0.663, but the Kiwis did redeem themselves by winning the inaugural WTC championship in 2021. That year, they beat India in a rain-hit WTC final held at the Rose Bowl Ground in Southampton. It marked their second ICC trophy in a century-long cricket history.

4. West Indies - 596
It’s no secret that the West Indies were once one of the most powerful and ruthless teams in world cricket. Since receiving their Test status in 1928, they played 596 Test matches and won 187 of them.
The win/loss percentage of the Windies stands at 0.834, as they lost 224 Tests and drew 184 contests as well. During their dominant era from the 1970s through the 1990s, their fast-bowling attacks and legendary batting line-ups helped establish a formidable Test reputation.
3. India - 600
Team India ranks third in this list with a total of 600 Test matches played since 1932. They have won 186 games and lost 188, which brings their win/loss percentage to 0.989. Their batting average of 33.77 is the second-highest among the five teams listed.
Notably, India is the only team to qualify for two back-to-back WTC finals in 2021 and 2023 but failed to win the title both times.
But before WTC came into existence, India dominated Test rankings for five consecutive years under Virat Kohli’s leadership.
Over the last many decades, India has become a much more dominant side in the modern era, particularly at home, while their overseas performances have also improved significantly.
2. Australia - 883
Australia stand second in this list of most Test matches played as they featured in 883 games since debuting in 1877.
The Aussies played the first-ever official Test in the history of cricket at the MCG against England. Since then, they have become a formidable force. Their 1.812 win/loss ratio is comfortably the best among the five teams.
Australia also have the highest batting average in the list at 34.31, while their scoring rate stands at 2.98 runs per over. From the legendary teams of the past to their modern Test sides, Australia have consistently remained one of the hardest teams to beat.
1. England - 1097
The team with the most Test matches played in cricket history is England, with 1097 official Tests played. Widely known as the home of cricket, England played their first official Test in 1877 against Australia.
They have recorded 405 wins and 336 defeats, along with 356 draws. Their win/loss ratio of 1.205 places them second behind Australia. England's longevity is a major part of their impressive numbers. As the oldest Test-playing nation, they have accumulated a huge number of matches over nearly 150 years.
