Shreyas Iyer stormed Punjab Kings to a comprehensive win over LSG in their must-win match of the IPL 2026 season. The outcome also marked Punjab Kings’ first win after a gap of nearly a month, as they took field in Lucknow on a trail of six successive defeats.
Captain Iyer himself notched up the winning runs, with his huge six off Mohsin Khan also bringing up his maiden IPL century. Through the course of his match-winning innings, the senior batter became only the sixth captain in IPL history to complete 3,000 runs, joining some of the tournament’s greatest players to join an elite list.

Shreyas Iyer is the only captain in IPL history to take three different franchises to the final. Apart from demonstrating his astute leadership on the field, the cricketer has also led his teams from the front with the bat.

4. Gautam Gambhir – 3,518 runs (127 innings)
Former KKR and Delhi Capitals skipper Gautam Gambhir has plundered 3,518 runs as a captain in IPL matches. The legendary former opener led the KKR franchise in 122 matches between 2011 and 2017, and guided them to two IPL victories in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
He led the Capitals in 25 additional matches to play 147 matches as captain.
3. Rohit Sharma – 3,986 runs (157 innings)

2. MS Dhoni – 4,753 runs (204 innings)
MS Dhoni has hauled 4,753 runs as an IPL captain in just 204 innings spanning 234 matches. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter led the CSK franchise in 210 of those matches, and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in another 14 matches.
He is also a five-time IPL winning captain, all for the CSK franchise, up until he passed the torch to rising star Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2024. Overall, he has aggregated 5,439 IPL runs at an average of nearly 40.
1. Virat Kohli – 4,994 runs (142 innings)
Virat Kohli has played 281 matches in his decorated IPL career. The legendary batter led the RCB franchise in 143 of those matches between the years 2011 and 2023. In 142 innings as an IPL captain, the perennial run machine made 4,994 runs, all for the RCB franchise.
Had Kohli scored six more runs during his captaincy days, the all-time great would have become the lone IPL captain in history to have charted 5,000 runs. Notably, he listed 973 of those runs in a single edition back in 2016.
