Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali lambasted Salman Agha after he caught himself in a controversial run-out against Bangladesh in the second ODI. Instead of showing support, Ali instead blamed Agha for a lack of game awareness.
The incident happened when Agha stepped out of his crease to return the ball to the bowler after it deflected off him.
Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz noticed he was outside the crease and broke the stumps, resulting in Salman Agha being given run-out.
Basit Ali brutally criticises Salman Agha
The dismissal led to full-fledged controversy because Salman Agha appeared to be helping the bowler rather than attempting a run, leading some to question whether the act violated the “spirit of cricket.”
However, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali rejected the criticism directed at Bangladesh and instead blamed Agha for poor awareness.
According to Basit, Salman Agha should never have left his crease casually. He further argued that this was not unprecedented, so Agha should have learnt from earlier controversies.
“A clap cannot happen with one hand. Such incidents have happened before. Shakib Al Hasan did it with Angelo Mathews, and Shoaib Akhtar deliberately obstructed Sachin Tendulkar in 1999. Pakistan declared Sachin out back then and did not call him back to bat. So what was Salman doing outside the crease?” Ali said on 'The Game Plan' show.
To support his argument, Basit referenced past incidents such as Shakib Al Hasan appealing against Angelo Mathews for a time-out dismissal and also a 1999 incident involving Shoaib Akhtar and Sachin Tendulkar, where Tendulkar was declared out in a contentious situation.

Salman Agha lectures Bangladesh on sportsmanship
Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Salman Agha was left furious after the controversial run-out. He lashed out on the field and slammed his helmet in absolute rage.
After the game, he slammed Bangladesh for a lack of sportsmanship. He believed the bowler could have chosen not to run him out and upheld the ‘spirit of cricket.’
Agha added that if he were in that position, he would not have taken the wicket in that manner. The skipper also explained that he thought he couldn’t be run out because the ball had already deflected off his pad and bat, which is why he tried to return it.
Mehidy Hasan stays defiant
While Salman Agha was furious, Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan defended his move, insisting that he did nothing wrong under the laws of cricket.
Miraz said his decision was based purely on the game situation, as Salman Agha was well outside the crease. If he missed the chance, the batters could have attempted a run.
Therefore, he reacted instinctively and tried to run him out. In short, Miraz believes he simply followed the laws of the game, and he shouldn’t be shamed for that.
That being said, coming back to the game, Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 128 runs by the DLS method in the second ODI to level the three-game series.
Defending 243 DLS in total, Pakistan bowled out the hosts for just 114 runs as Haris Rauf and Maaz Sadaqat contributed with three wickets each. The series finale will be held in Dhaka on March 15.
