After their T20 World Cup campaigns ended on a sorrowful note, New Zealand and South Africa will clash against each other in the first T20I of the series on Sunday at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. While the Kiwis reached the finals of the T20 World Cup and lost against the Indian side, the Proteas made it to the semis before New Zealand knocked them out.

The Proteas will feel a need for revenge as they take on the home side in a riveting battle. However, almost all the big names from the World Cup campaign have been rested as the Proteas have sent in a relatively inexperienced squad for the tour.

The series provides a great chance for the visitors to take the World Cup semifinal revenge, and with the first T20I taking place on Sunday, here is how the South Africans could lineup for the marquee clash.

South Africa Probable XI Vs New Zealand- 1st T20I

Openers and top order: Tony de Zorzi, Jason Smith, Jordan Hermann

With an inexperienced squad, the Proteas are likely to go in with Tony de Zorzi and Jason Smith as the two openers for the 1st T20I. De Zorzi strikes at nearly 153 in T20Is, and on smaller grounds of New Zealand, he will be an effective choice at the top.

Alongside him, Jason Smith will open the batting. Smith has done well in the domestic circuit, as well as in the SA20, and will be an explosive choice at the top to open alongside the left-handed de Zorzi.

A technically sound batter and an aggressor when needed, Jordan Hermann could be a solid choice to play at number 3. When needed, he could consolidate the innings, and if required, he can also take on the attack with ease.

Middle-order and all-rounders: Rubin Hermann, Dian Forrester, Wiaan Mulder, George Linde

Unlike their middle-order, which was one of the best in the T20 World Cup, South Africa’s current middle-order for the upcoming T20Is looks weak on paper, with keeper Rubin Hermann to bat at number 4. The keeper-batter has done decently in SA20 and in domestic cricket, and he has played seven matches for South Africa in T20Is.

Perhaps the most promising player in the playing XI would be Dian Forrester. The left-handed batter is an aggressive player, and he strikes at 141 in T20 cricket as the South Africans would need him to deliver the goods in the middle-order.

Two experienced players, Wiaan Mulder and George Linde, will occupy the number 6, and 7 slots. The batting looks thin on paper, but the two players have enough firepower to play the role of a finisher.

Bowlers: Keshav Maharaj, Ottneil Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Lutho Sipamla

Keshav Maharaj will lead the inexperienced South African attack, and on smaller New Zealand grounds, he will not only have to contain runs, but also has to take wickets to disrupt the strong Kiwi batting unit.

The 32-year-old Ottneil Baartman has done well, not only for the Proteas, but also in the domestic T20 games as well. The bowler has 22 T20I scalps in 17 matches, and has picked up 157 wickets in 111 T20 matches. He will be the key bowler in the powerplay for his side.

Promising pacer, Gerald Coetzee, and Lutho Sipamla will be the other two bowlers as the attack looks decent on paper.
