Bangladesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 36-year-old confirmed the same on his Facebook post on Wednesday, April 15.

It is worth noting that Hossain has not played a single competitive match since January 2025 last year. The right-arm paceman was a regular member of the Bangladesh setup in the 2010s, and played three ODI World Cups for his national side in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

Rubel Hossain has confirmed his retirement from international cricket. On Wednesday, the cricketer took to his Facebook account and wrote “The national team is my emotion, but there comes a time to say goodbye.”

Hossain also thanked his friends, family, media professionals and fans for their continued support over the years.

What’s next for Rubel Hossain?

Rubel Hossain, aged 36, also said that Bangladesh’s national jersey will forever remain close to his heart. The cricketer has decided to conclude his international career after falling out of Bangladesh’s national contention. The speedster last played any international match for Bangladesh back in April 2021 during a tour of New Zealand.

While his international journey has ended, the 36-year-old has confirmed that he will continue to play domestic cricket in the country. He might also find a place in any of the franchises in future Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) seasons. However, the cricketer has not played a single BPL game since his solitary appearance in the 2025 edition of the tournament.

When Rubel tangled with Virat Kohli

Rubel Hossain was a regular member of the Bangladesh starting XI that played the 2011 and 2015 ICC ODI World Cups in the subcontinent and Oceania respectively. In the 2011 opening match between Bangladesh and India, the then young paceman had a run-in with India’s star-in-the-making Virat Kohli.

The two cricketers exchanged some words in the heat of the moment, before umpires were forced to intervene between the two. While Kohli scored a match-winning century in the game, Hossain had the last laugh in the 2015 World Cup face-off between India and Bangladesh at the MCG. The speedster dismissed Kohli for just three off eight balls to put India under immense trouble early in their high-stakes quarter final clash.

A look back at Rubel Hossain’s career

Rubel Hossain made his debut in all three forms of the game in a space of just six months back in 2009. He started off his international career with a Test match against the West Indies team in Kingstown in January 2009, at the age of just 19.

He went on to play 27 matches for the country, picking up 36 wickets in the process at an expensive bowling average of 76.77.

Hossain enjoyed more success in ODIs and T20Is for Bangladesh, picking up 157 wickets across both formats in just 129 innings. In ODIs alone, the fast bowler bagged 129 wickets at an average of 34.31.

He was one of the key members of the Bangladesh line-up that began dominating visiting teams in home ODI series in the mid-2010s.
