After a series of dot balls at the start of Lucknow Super Giants’ innings vs RCB in the IPL 2026, Rishabh Pant walked off the field. Notably, out of those balls, one hit his body hard enough, forcing him into a fairly long break and a consultation with the physio.

In action, Josh Hazlewood’s hostile short ball hit Pant’s unprotected left elbow as he looked to pull it. Distraught with the pain, Rishabh Pant was eventually retired hurt in the fifth over of LSG’s innings.

That being said, in this article, let’s take a look at the list of players who have retired hurt in the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far.

Rohit Sharma is the other retired hurt batter in IPL 2026 so far

Earlier, Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma retired hurt during his side’s IPL 2026 clash against the defending champions, RCB, at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Rohit appeared to have hurt his hamstring while batting and had received his medical attention on the field in the sixth over of MI’s chase. The 39-year-old had his thigh strapped and attempted to continue batting.

But his effort lasted just a delivery as he decided to retire hurt, while batting on 19 from 13 deliveries.

Mumbai Indians were chasing a mammoth 241-run target for a win. However, they eventually finished at 222/5, losing the game by 18 runs.

What is the difference between retired hurt and retired out in cricket?

In cricket, a batter who leaves the field due to injury or illness is referred to as retired hurt (also known as retired not out). Essentially, they can return later in the innings, if fit and if their team hasn’t lost all its wickets.

According to MCC Law 25.4, a batter retiring due to injury, illness, or unavoidable cause is ‘Retired Not Out’ and can resume their innings after informing the umpires. They can return after a wicket falls or another batter retires.

On the other hand, the retired out is a strategic decision made by the batter’s team. The batter voluntarily leaves the field, not because of a health issue, but due to the requirement in the game. The retired batter cannot return to bat again.

In simple words, it is a self-declared dismissal, used to bring in a new batter who may better suit the match situation.

Under MCC Law 25.4.3, a batter may retire at any time when the ball is dead, provided they inform the umpires of their reason. If the retirement is for any reason other than illness, injury, or unavoidable cause, the batter is recorded as "Retired - out" and cannot resume their innings without the opposing captain's consent.
