Ravi Shastri Stand to be inaugurated at Wankhede Stadium

Ravi Shastri is set to be inaugurated at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, April 9 later this week. The stand will be inaugurated by none other than Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, as he will be officially renaming the stand after former India all-rounder and ex-head coach of the national side.

Shastri’s association with Indian cricket spans well over four decades, marked by influence both on and off the field. As a cricketer, he was a dependable all-rounder and was part of the Indian team that lifted the 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup in England.

An icon for the Mumbai team in domestic cricket, he was also one of the earliest batters in history to have hit six sixes in an over, doing so in a first-class match.

The former cricketer represented the nation in 80 Tests and 150 ODI matches; aggregating nearly 7,000 runs across both formats and picking up 280 international wickets.

Ravi Shastri’s historic coaching stint and commentary legacy

Ravi Shastri has also been commentating for the BCCI for over three decades. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest commentators in the world, alongside Harsha Bhogle. Shastri’s voice has been synonymous with some of Indian cricket’s most defining moments, most memorably calling the triumphant scenes of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup victory, among several other landmark occasions.

He also served the Indian team as head coach between the years 2017 and 2021. During his tenure, Team India registered historic Test series wins in Australia in early 2019 and 2021. The ‘Men in Blue’ also reached the semifinal of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in England.

Diana Edulji and Dilip Sardesai also set to be honored by MCA

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is also set to honor former India Women’s captain Diana Edulji and legendary men’s batter Dilip Sardesai. On the same day, both Edulji and Sardesai will see gates named after them at the Wankhede Stadium.

Edulji was one of the earliest icons of India Women’s cricket, and served the nation in 20 Tests and 34 ODI matches between the years 1976 and 1993.

Late Dilip Sardesai, on the other hand, was widely acknowledged as one of the greatest batters of Indian cricket. He scored over 2,000 runs in 30 Tests, and aggregated over 10,000 runs in 179 first-class matches at an average of 41.75.

Amid the ongoing IPL 2026 season, the MCA’s decision to honor all three stalwarts adds a touch of legacy and reverence to the high-octane tournament, celebrating the enduring contributions of icons who helped shape Indian cricket.
