MI To Leave Suryakumar Yadav Ahead Of IPL 2027 (Source: AFP Photos)
In all likelihood, Mumbai Indians (MI) will make wholesale changes for IPL 2027. Earlier, it was reported that Hardik Pandya would be leaving the franchise ahead of the upcoming edition. Now it appears Suryakumar Yadav will not be there either.
As reported by RevSportz, MI might part ways with Suryakumar Yadav, India’s reigning T20 World Cup-winning captain, who led the franchise in IPL 2026 when Hardik Pandya was unavailable. Adding to that, the next season could well and truly be the last edition for Rohit Sharma as well.
Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sacked Suryakumar Yadav from T20I captaincy along with a place in the national set-up.
To replace him, Shreyas Iyer, who has seen exceptional success in the IPL as leader, has taken over. His first assignment will be in Ireland, with the two T20Is scheduled for June 26 and June 28.
Suryakumar Yadav To Pay The Price After IPL 2026 Woes
Suryakumar Yadav had a very poor IPL 2026 with the bat in hand. Across 13 innings, he could only muster 270 runs at an average of just 20.77. For someone who made 717 runs in a single edition a year before, it was a very disappointing show altogether from the 35-year-old.
To make matters worse, Suryakumar, fondly called SKY, was not exceptionally well with the bat in hand during the T20 World Cup 2026. He had a strike rate of 136.72 during the competition, having aggregated 242 runs in nine matches.

As a result, SKY’s value decreased from time to time, and MI, in all likelihood, will get rid of him, who has an IPL salary of INR 16.35 crore at present.
Nevertheless, there could be a trade deal for SKY ahead of IPL 2027. Even though the report did not mention any teams that are interested in him, there is a good chance that SKY might return to KKR, a franchise for which he played in the past in leadership positions.
"Franchises from the North and East are reportedly eager to acquire his services, with both willing to sweeten the deal by offering him the captaincy," the RevSportz report read.
Rohit Sharma’s IPL Future At MI In Jeopardy
In another significant development, Rohit Sharma’s IPL future has become the subject of discussion as well. The report revealed that they will ask Rohit, now aged 39, whether he would continue playing in the IPL.
If yes, he might have one final year in the next edition for the five-time champions. Let’s not forget that Rohit too has a huge IPL salary of INR 16.30 crore for MI.
The changes MI are looking to make are all about building a new team with more money available around Tilak Varma, who is potentially their next IPL captain.
