Rohit Sharma's future in India's ODI team has been a major topic of discussion recently. Although the Indian star batter has played several useful innings, questions remain about whether he will be part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

However, Rohit Sharma gave a strong response to his critics during the ODI series against Afghanistan. India won the three-match series 3-0, and Rohit played an important role in the victory.

Rohit Sharma Keeps His World Cup Dream Alive

Notably, in the 3rd ODI at MA Chidambaram Stadium, he scored an impressive 79 runs and looked in good touch. Before that, Rohit Sharma had also scored 48 runs in the second ODI.

At the same time, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also made a strong statement with the bat. In the third ODI against Afghanistan, he scored an unbeaten century and guided India to a comfortable nine-wicket victory.

In the final ODI, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal shared a brilliant 170-run opening partnership. While Rohit scored 79, Jaiswal remained unbeaten and completed a memorable hundred.

Notably, Rohit's scores in the series were 16, 48, and 79. Therefore, many fans are wondering whether these performances are enough for him to secure a place in the upcoming England tour.

Shubman Gill Avoids Giving A Direct Answer

India's next ODI assignment will be against England, and the squad is expected to be announced soon. However, captain Shubman Gill did not reveal who would open the batting in that series.

“I mean, it is a good kind of headache having all the players that are performing, and I think the squad will be announced tomorrow or the next couple of days. So, we will see the squad, and then we will have the best XI to put out anyway.

I mean, we will see where everyone’s fitness is. If everyone is fit, like I said, we will see who is in the squad, and based on the squad, we will try to make the best XI possible,” Gill told reporters in the post-match press conference.

Thus, Gill chose not to directly answer questions about Rohit Sharma's future or his chances of playing in the 2027 World Cup following Jaiswal's impressive performances.

Shubman Gill Praises Yashasvi Jaiswal's Performance

It is important to note that Jaiswal was included in the Afghanistan ODI squad after Virat Kohli suffered a hamstring injury during the IPL 2026 final.

Although Jaiswal failed to make a big score in the second ODI, he bounced back strongly with a century in the final match.

Speaking about the young batter, Shubman Gill said: “Honestly, we all know he is a phenomenal player. And it’s not easy for any player. If all the players are available, he is the unfortunate one who sometimes misses out. And because Kohli was not available in the series, he had the opportunity; he got a couple of games, and he played really well today," Gill said.

"So hopefully he will continue to perform, and he will continue to keep grabbing the chances,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Indian ODI squad for the England series is expected to be announced soon. The three-match ODI series will begin on July 14.
