Australia returned to international cricket for the first time since the end of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, as they take on Pakistan in the first of the three-match ODI series in Rawalpindi.
Considering a long T20 season just came to its conclusion, several senior players, including Mitchell Marsh and the pace-battery, were rested for the series, and new names got a nod. Among the fresh faces was Oliver Peake, who was handed his debut cap at just 19.
This turns out to be a significant moment in the player’s career as he became the youngest batter to debut for Australia in ODIs, beating Ricky Ponting’s record of 20 years and 58 days.
As Peake looks to impress on his debut, we take a look at the youngest Australians to make ODI debuts.
Youngest ODI debutants for Australia
5. 19y 267d- Craig McDermott vs West Indies, Melbourne, 1985
The opening fast bowler, Craig McDermott, faced the West Indies in January 1985 during the first match of the Benson & Hedges World Series. After Australia set the target of 241 runs in 50 overs, McDermott was given the responsibility to share the new ball from one end.
Against a star-studded lineup, McDermott dismissed the legendary Sir Viv Richards for 47(43) with a caught behind and finished with 1/52 (9.5). However, the West Indies won the match by 7 wickets. McDermott went on to play 138 ODIs and 71 Tests, picking 203 and 291 wickets, respectively.

4. 19y 261d- Oliver Peake vs Pakistan, Rawalpindi, 2026 (Today)
Ahead of the series opener, it was confirmed that Oliver Peake from Victoria is set to receive his cap in Rawalpindi at 19y and 261d. He comes to the setup with a great reputation from the age-group cricket, having scored 480 runs in 12 Youth ODIs with 3 hundreds at an average of 68.57.
Peake has already made his BBL debut for Melbourne Renegades and scored 184 runs in 7 innings, including a last-ball six win against Perth Scorchers earlier in 2026. He has also played 13 FC games and 6 List A games for Victoria, scoring 6 fifties.
Looking forward, he looks like a great long-term prospect for the Aussies.
3. 19y 260d- Ray Bright vs New Zealand, Dunedin, 1974
Ray Bright was a left-arm orthodox bowler who debuted in Australia’s tour of New Zealand in 1974. During the first ODI at Dunedin, Australia bowled first in a rain-affected match, and Bright completed his full quota of 7 overs.
He finished with 0/44 (7) as the only bowler without a wicket, but NZ were restricted to 194/9 and Australia chased the target in 24.3 overs by 7 wickets.
2. 19y 165d- Josh Hazlewood vs England, Southampton, 2010
Josh Hazlewood first broke into the ODI team on their tour of England in 2010. He played the first ODI of the series at Southampton as Australia batted first and scored 267/7 in 50 overs, courtesy of Michael Clarke’s 87 off 97.
Hazlewood bowled as the first change bowler after Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris and got rid of the wicketkeeper and opener, Craig Kieswetter, on 38(44). He finished with 1/41 (7) as England chased the score in 46 overs, thanks to a century from Eoin Morgan.
At 35, Josh Hazlewood remains a key member of Australia across formats, having played 76 Tests, 96 ODIs and 60 T20Is so far.
1. 18y 164d- Pat Cummins vs South Africa, Centurion, 2011
The youngest ODI debutant for Australia is the World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins. Just over a year after his New South Wales teammate created the record in England, Pat Cummins made his debut at Centurion in October 2011 in the first ODI of the series.
In a rain-affected game, Australia scored 183/4 in 29 overs and posted a target of 223 (DLS). Cummins was the first-change bowler after Bollinger and Mitchell Johnson and bowled only 3 overs, but dismissed Jacques Kallis, JP Duminy and Johan Botha to help bowl out South Africa for 129 runs and win by 93 runs.
Much like Hazlewood, Cummins is also an all-format star, having played 72 Tests, 90 ODIs and 57 T20Is and also captained Australia to World Cup 2023 glory.
