According to emerging reports, the BCCI is going to appoint Shreyas Iyer as India's new T20I captain. If he takes charge, Iyer will replace Suryakumar Yadav, who recently joined Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni on the list of elite Indian captains who have led the team to a T20 World Cup title.
Shreyas Iyer has been outstanding as a captain in the IPL, having led KKR to their third title triumph in 2024. The stylish Mumbaikar powered Delhi Capitals to an IPL final in 2020 before replicating a similar success with Punjab Kings in the 2025 season.
Although he has an impressive win percentage of 54.45 in the IPL, captaining the Indian team will be a different challenge altogether for Iyer.
As he's all set to take charge, here we list India's most successful T20I captains based on win percentage, with a minimum 10 matches at the helm.
Players who have led India in T20Is
MS Dhoni was India's first official T20I captain as he formally took charge ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The talismanic wicket-keeper batter led the team to an emphatic T20 World Cup glory in the inaugural edition.
Dhoni captained India in 72 T20Is, and Virat Kohli succeeded him as the full-time skipper in 2017. The RCB legend led the Men in Blue across 50 T20Is before Rohit Sharma replaced him ahead of the 2022 World Cup edition.
The Mumbaikar finished his stint as one of India's most successful T20I captains, powering them to the title in 2024. Suryakumar Yadav became the Indian T20I skipper after Rohit's retirement from the shortest format.

Apart from these full-time skippers, Hardik Pandya, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill have also led the Indian T20I side on a few occasions.
We have taken MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya into consideration to determine India's three most successful captains based on winning percentage, as these cricketers have led the team in more than 10 matches.
India's 3 most successful T20I captains based on win percentage
3. Hardik Pandya- 62.5
- Experienced Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya captained the Indian T20I team in 16 matches. The Baroda-born cricketer led the Men in Blue to 10 wins, while the team sustained five defeats during his tenure.
- Although he was never officially appointed as the Indian T20I captain, Pandya has a sizeable sample size as the skipper. India's defeat in the T20I series against West Indies led to Pandya's sacking, as the management removed him from the leadership group.
- Despite losing his position to Suryakumar Yadav, Pandya has a healthy win percentage of 62.5 and claims the third spot in our list.
2. Suryakumar Yadav- 76.92
- Swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav was formally appointed as the Indian T20I captain after Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format. He led the side across 52 matches, with the team emerging victorious on 40 occasions.
- Although Suryakumar Yadav's batting form dipped with time, he enjoyed stellar success as a skipper. India lost only 8 T20Is under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, who also propelled the Men in Blue to the title in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
- Overall, Suryakumar finished with a staggering win percentage of 76.92, thus claiming the second position on the elite list.
1. Rohit Sharma- 79.03
- Legendary batter Rohit Sharma became India's full-time captain after the BCCI removed Virat Kohli from the role.
- The talismanic cricketer led India to the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal before guiding them to a glorious win in the 2024 edition of the competition. Overall, Rohit captained the Indian side across 62 T20Is, resulting in 49 victories during his stint.
- Thus, Rohit recorded a superb win percentage of 79.03, statistically becoming India's most successful T20I skipper.
- He surpassed the likes of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who have a win percentage of 56.94 and 60, respectively, in the format.
