Tilak Varma has rapidly evolved from a promising youngster into one of India’s most dependable performers in the T20I setup.
From starring in India’s historic 3-1 T20I series win in South Africa to anchoring the 2025 T20 Asia Cup for the national side in the UAE, the elegant left-handed batter has repeatedly showcased the temperament and consistency required at the highest level.
Amid reports that Tilak could be appointed India's next T20I vice-captain following uncertainty surrounding Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy future, interest in the youngster's leadership credentials has risen sharply.
As speculation surrounding his potential elevation continues to gather momentum, here is a look at his captaincy record for Team India so far.
Tilak Varma captaincy record for India amid vice-captaincy rumours
Tilak Varma's captaincy record suggests that he has not led the senior Indian team in any international format yet. However, the prolific middle and top-order batter has led the India A team on several occasions.
He was first appointed as India A captain for the 2024 ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Oman in late 2024.
Under his leadership, the India A team crushed UAE, Pakistan Shaheens and hosts Oman with convincing margins to top the Group B points table.

However, the team lost to Afghanistan A in the second semi-final of the tournament by 20 runs to bow out of the competition.
Thus, Tilak Varma's captaincy record suggests that India-A registered three wins and a defeat under his leadership.
A year later, Tilak Varma once again led India-A, this time for a home three-match unofficial ODI series against South Africa-A.
Under his guidance, the hosts secured a comfortable 2-1 series win. Here is a look at Tilak Varma's captaincy record.

| Format | Matches | Wins | Losses |
| T20 | 4 | 3 | 1 |
| List A | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| Total | 7 | 5 | 2 |
Tilak Varma's record as a player
The Hyderabad batter also holds a prolific record as a player for Team India, at least in T20Is. Yet to make his Test debut and out of contention for India’s ODI setup since December 2025, the cricketer has played 49 T20I matches for the national team.
The left-handed batter has aggregated 1,390 runs from 46 T20I innings at a prolific average of 44.83 and with an astonishing strike rate of 145.54. The 23-year-old has plundered two hundreds so far in his career, both against South Africa during India’s historic 3-1 T20I series win in the rainbow nation back in late 2024.
The 69* off 53 balls he clattered against arch-rivals Pakistan in the final of the 2025 T20 Asia Cup continues to remain one of Varma’s magnum opus in international cricket.
Tilak Varma tipped to become India’s vice-captain
Varma is reportedly tipped to become the next Indian vice-captain following the uncertain captaincy future of 2025 Asia Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup winner Suryakumar Yadav.
However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the reported leadership reshuffle or Varma's potential appointment as vice-captain.
