On February 15, 2024, Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel received their Test caps from the Indian team in the same match against England in Rajkot. Sarfaraz walked into international cricket after years of hard-earned runs in domestic cricket, while Jurel arrived as a relatively inexperienced backup wicketkeeper for Rishabh Pant. Almost two years later, their positions in India's Test plans could hardly look more different. Sarfaraz has played only six Tests and has been away from the setup for nearly two years. Jurel, meanwhile, has featured in 10 Tests and gradually established himself as one of India's preferred wicketkeeping options.Now, the toe injury to Sai Sudharsan has changed the equation. Sarfaraz Khan has been recalled to India's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour, and with the first Test beginning in Galle on August 15, the 28-year-old has another opportunity to force his way back into India's playing XI. Sarfaraz and Jurel started together, but their journeys split quicklyThere was almost something poetic about Sarfaraz and Dhruv Jurel making their Test debuts in the same game. Sarfaraz had spent years waiting for his opportunity after dominating domestic cricket, while Jurel's rise was comparatively sudden. Yet both made immediate impressions in the Rajkot Test.Sarfaraz scored 62 off 66 balls in his first innings and followed it with an unbeaten 68 in the second. Meanwhile, Jurel, batting lower down the order, played a composed knock of 46 runs off 104 balls.At that stage, there was little indication that their careers would move in completely different paths. Sarfaraz appeared to have finally arrived at the destination he had been chasing for years.Jurel seemed to be India's backup wicketkeeper who had simply been handed a chance. But Test cricket rarely rewards careers according to first impressions. Sarfaraz Khan finished the 2023-24 England series with 200 runs at an average of 50, including three half-centuries. Jurel, meanwhile, scored 190 runs, averaging 63.33 in the same series and produced the innings that arguably changed the trajectory of his career. His 90-run knock in Ranchi came at a time when India were struggling at 177/7. He then returned in the second innings and helped the hosts chase down the target with an unbeaten 39.That match did something more important than add numbers to Dhruv Jurel's career. It helped him earn the trust of the Indian team management. In fact, they suggest almost the opposite. His 150 against New Zealand in Bengaluru remains the most decorated innings of his brief international career.The problem was what came around it. Sarfaraz scored 200 runs at 50 against England, but managed only 171 runs at 28.50 against New Zealand. More importantly, the New Zealand series exposed a question around his batting technique, as he registered two ducks in six innings.That became particularly significant because India were heading into a period where conditions outside the subcontinent were becoming increasingly important.Sarfaraz Khan's batting position also complicated matters. He has been most productive at No.4, where his two innings have produced 150 runs at an average of 75. But India's established top order left little room there. At No.6, where he has batted six times, his average drops to 31.20.Jurel's numbers are hardly overwhelming either. He has 478 runs from 10 Tests at 34.14, with one century and one half-century. And that is precisely what makes this comparison interesting.Jurel has not displaced Sarfaraz because his batting record is vastly superior. He has stayed ahead because India see more ways in which Jurel can fit into a Test XI.How Dhruv Jurel slowly took the position Sarfaraz Khan seemed destined forJurel's original entry point was as a wicketkeeper. His breakthrough against England changed that perception. The 90 in Ranchi demonstrated that he could absorb pressure. His keeping gave India another layer of security. Jurel could contribute with the gloves, survive difficult spells, bat with the tail and provide a technically compact option in conditions where India expected batting collapses to become part of the contest.Sarfaraz offered something different. His name was never officially confirmed in that episode, but the controversy added another layer to an already difficult period in his international career. As a result, a player who had waited years for his India opportunity suddenly found himself having to start again.Jurel's numbers are vulnerable, and that is Sarfaraz's openingThere is an important detail hidden inside Jurel's overall numbers. His 478 Test runs have come at an average of 34.14, which is not the kind of figure that makes his position completely untouchable.He has had excellent periods. His 190 runs at 63.33 against England in 2024 were followed by 175 at 87.50 against West Indies in 2025, including his maiden Test century, a 125-run innings.But there have also been serious dips. Dhruv Jurel averaged only 6.00 against Australia, 26.50 in England and 7.25 against South Africa. His overall average therefore sits below Sarfaraz's 37.10 despite having played four more Tests.That is where the Sri Lanka opportunity becomes particularly significant for Sarfaraz Khan. The injury to Sai Sudharsan has opened a vacancy in India's batting group, allowing Sarfaraz back into the Test squad at exactly the moment when he needs a pathway to rebuild his career.Sarfaraz ready to make his groundSarfaraz's biggest advantage is that he already knows what Test cricket feels like. His first six Tests produced 371 runs at 37.10, including a century and three fifties. He has already experienced the rush of his debut, the pressure of a first hundred and the frustration of being dropped.He has to demonstrate that the weaknesses which pushed him out of the setup have been addressed. If Sri Lanka presents him with spin challenge, he has an opportunity to return to the environment in which his batting strengths are most naturally suited, especially after a fitter comeback with his physical appearance.Now, Dhruv Jurel has earned India's trust by repeatedly demonstrating that he can survive situations where the game is falling apart.
