The warm-up fixture between India and Sri Lanka XI went as per plan for the visitors. Team India defeated the hosts in a three-day practice match and will enter the first Test on August 15 with plenty of confidence. The batters scored runs, while the bowlers did their job on a not-so-easy wicket, with almost all the boxes ticked.

While most of the Indian players delivered the goods, some failed in the practice game, as India still has a couple of key questions to answer before the first Test begins in Galle. The inclusion of Sarfaraz Khan has created a new headache for Gautam Gambhir as the team needs to rethuink about their strategy.

Ahead of the India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test match, we take a look at the major selection headache that the team management has and needs to answer.

1) Sarfaraz Khan Vs Dhruv Jurel: Who should bat in middle order?

Sarfaraz Khan finally got his long-due opportunity in the Indian Test team as he made his much-awaited return as injured Sai Sudharsan’s replacement. The batter has been out of the team for quite a while now, but he has been racking up runs in the domestic circuit.

Sri Lankan conditions demand batters to have an exceptional game against spin, and Sarfaraz has that in his repertoire. However, he faces stern competition from Dhruv Jurel, who, too, will aim to seal the middle-order spot.

• There is not much to separate Sarfaraz and Jurel against spinners in Tests, with the Mumbaikar averaging 35, and Jurel having an average of 37.
• However, what makes Sarfaraz an X-factor is his ability to take down the spinners, as he strikes at 75. He can do the Rishabh Pant role in the middle-order, as the right-handed batter can be the aggressor against the Sri Lankan spinners.
• While Jurel is outstanding, Sarfaraz gives Team India a cutting edge, and he should be the one to play in the middle order.

2) Saransh Jain Vs Kuldeep Yadav: All-rounder vs genuine spinner

Both Ravindra Jadeja, and Manav Suthar impressed in the warm-up fixture, and they’ll be the first-choice spinners in India’s playing XI for the first Test.

That leaves India with a vacancy for a third spinner as the Galle surface will assist spin-bowling, and India will play three of those. Saransh Jain and Kuldeep Yadav are fighting for that spot.

On one hand, we have an all-rounder who can bat a bit in the lower order, and on the other hand, there is Kuldeep Yadav, the genuine wicket-taking Indian spinner.

While Saransh has been good in domestic cricket, India doesn’t need another all-rounder in the playing XI, especially with Jadeja, and Suthar present. Instead, the team should go in with a proper spinner, and that bowler is Kuldeep Yadav.

3) Gurnoor Brar vs Prasidh Krishna: Recent exploits vs experience battle

On paper, there is an interesting case for both players to be selected in the playing XI. Prasidh Krishna has been given the longer rope and has done well in bits and pieces for India. On the other hand, Gurnoor Brar has been brilliant in recent matches and was good in the practice game against Sri Lanka A.

There is a small section of fans who demand Gurnoor Brar to be included in the Indian playing XI, but Prasidh should be the one given preference, at least for the first Test.

• Last year, he was trusted by the management on the away tour of England, and while he went for runs, the Indian seamer also took important wickets.
• Overall, last year, Prasidh played four Tests, and scalped 20 wickets, with an average of 31. Moreover, if he is not included in the first Test, India will go in with Brar and Mohammed Siraj, two bowlers with a similar skill set.
• Prasidh offers something different as he can use his height to his advantage, and could be a trouble-maker for the Sri Lankan batters.

Conclusion

While India has almost all the slots filled for the first Test vs Sri Lanka, debate remains over three slots as one middle-order slot is vacant; there are doubts over the all-rounder vs spin-bowler battle, and who should be the one to play alongside Siraj: Prasidh or Gurnoor.

India should be tempted to go in with Sarfaraz as the middle-order batter, and Kuldeep should pip Saransh Jain. Moreover, experience should prevail over recent exploits as Prasidh Krishna should start over Gurnoor Brar.
