Sarthak Ranjan Saving KKR From Spending On Ajinkya Rahane’s Replacement With DPL Exploits

Sarthak Ranjan has suddenly given Kolkata Knight Riders something they may not have expected when they bought him for ₹30 lakh ahead of IPL 2026. The 29-year-old batter did not get a single opportunity during the season, largely because KKR already had established options such as Finn Allen, Ajinkya Rahane and Tim Seifert at the top of the order.

However, with Rahane now retired from all forms of cricket, KKR could have been forced to look for another Indian opener at the IPL 2027 auction. Sarthak Ranjan's sensational start to DPL 2026, though, could completely change that plan.

Sarthak Ranjan Has Started DPL 2026 Like A Player With Something To Prove

Ranjan has been almost impossible to stop in DPL 2026 so far. Representing New Delhi Strikers, the batter has scored 224 runs in three innings at an astonishing average of 74.67 and a strike rate of 169.70.

Ranjan began his campaign with 64 off 39 balls against Central Delhi Kings on August 3. He followed that up with an even more destructive 95 off 50 balls against East Delhi Riders on August 5. He then produced another impressive innings against New Delhi Tigers on August 9, scoring 65 off 43 balls.

That gives Sarthak Ranjan three consecutive scores above 50 and a total of 224 runs from his first three innings. The most interesting part is that there has been no dip in his scoring rate despite the consistency. A strike rate of 169.70 suggests that Ranjan is not having to sacrifice aggression to remain at the crease.

His latest innings against New Delhi Tigers also extended what has quickly become one of the most impressive starts to the DPL 2026 season.

From 449 Runs In DPL 2025 To Three Consecutive Fifties In 2026

Ranjan's current run should not be viewed as a random hot streak. The New Delhi Strikers batter was already one of the most productive players in the previous edition of the competition, finishing DPL 2025 as the second-highest run-scorer with 449 runs in nine innings.

He averaged 56.13 and struck at 146.73, numbers that showed he was capable of producing both volume and intent in T20 cricket.

His 2025 campaign included a series of important contributions. Ranjan started with 82 off 60 balls against Central Delhi Kings before scoring 77 off 50 against Outer Delhi Warriors.

Now, one year later, Sarthak Ranjan has started DPL 2026 by taking that same attacking template to another level. Three innings have already produced 224 runs, and for Kolkata, the timing could hardly be better.

Sarthak Ranjan Could Save KKR From Hunting For An Indian Opener In IPL 2027 Auction

This is where Ranjan's DPL performances become particularly significant for Kolkata Knight Riders. Kolkata had signed the batter ahead of IPL 2026, but he never got a game during the tournament. The franchise already had several options and as a result, Ranjan's first IPL season passed without an appearance.

The situation has now changed. Rahane has retired from all forms of cricket, leaving Kolkata with an obvious question ahead of the 2027 season that is who replaces the experienced Indian opener?

Ordinarily, the franchise could have entered the auction looking for an Indian batter who can open, provide stability and still maintain a healthy scoring rate in T20 cricket.

But Ranjan's DPL form gives KKR another option. The franchise already owns him. More importantly, he is showing exactly the kind of numbers that could encourage Kolkata to give him a proper opportunity rather than spending heavily on another Indian opener.

One Overseas, One Indian Combination At the Top Virtually Solved

Kolkata's opening combination also makes Ranjan's emergence particularly interesting. Finn Allen gives the franchise an explosive overseas option, while Tim Seifert provides another international batter capable of opening or contributing in the top order.

But the availability of a proven Indian opener gives a team significantly more flexibility when constructing its overseas combination. That is where Sarthak Ranjan could become valuable.

If he establishes himself as a reliable Indian opener, KKR would not necessarily have to spend one of their overseas slots on an opener. They could instead use their international slots elsewhere while pairing Ranjan with an overseas aggressor such as Allen.
