Yuzvendra Chahal Throws His Hat Into The Ring For 2027 World Cup Selection

It has been 3.5 years since Yuzvendra Chahal, the wily Indian spinner, played an ODI match for the Men in Blue. January 2023 was the last time he donned the Indian jersey in a 50-over contest, and since then, Chahal has not been in the scheme of things for the BCCI.

He has been performing consistently, not only in India, but Chahal has also delivered the goods overseas as he continues to weave his magic in the English domestic circuit, playing for Northamptonshire.

Chahal weaves magic in England to put forward his name for 2027 ODI World Cup

Chahal picked up three wickets for Northamptonshire in their ODI Cup match against Somerset on Sunday. Archie Vaughn became his first victim, followed by Jack Leach and Jake Ball.

He ended the match with figures of 3 for 35 as Somerset was dismissed for a paltry 185 in just 47 overs. Chahal has continued to showcase his white-ball skills in the competition as he currently has 15 wickets in just six matches, and is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

With yet another solid ODI tournament, Chahal has given a timely reminder to the BCCI as he puts forward his name for selection in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad.

Case for Chahal's inclusion in India's ODI World Cup squad

The Indian team management has plenty of reasons to pick Chahal in their squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. First, he boasts an incredible record that cannot be denied.

In 72 ODI games, he has 121 wickets, with an average of 27.13 and an economy of 5.26. The player has performed exceptionally well across nations, and he will bring a wealth of experience, which the team lacks at the moment.

Right now, the Indian team has a shortage of quality spinners. The BCCI doesn’t trust Kuldeep, as witnessed in the England series. Moreover, Varun Chakaravarthy has been injury-prone, and so has been Washington Sundar.

The team needs a reliable, wicket-taking spinner, and Chahal possesses that quality in the 50-overs format.

The 36-year-old has played nine ODI matches in South Africa, and in those matches, the spinner has scalped 18 wickets, with an average of 22.72, and an economy of 5.03.

Out of his 18 wickets, 16 of those came in the famous 2018 series, which the Indian team won, courtesy of Virat Kohli’s batting dominance and Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling brilliance.

With India in dire need of a wicket-taking spinner in the middle-overs, the BCCI should look at Chahal, and his recent numbers.
