Is Gautam Gambhir's India Equipped Enough To Counter Biggest Sri Lankan Threat?

On Tuesday, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee announced India's Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Led by Shubman Gill, the Indian team will lock horns with their Sri Lankan counterparts across two Test matches from August 15 to 27. 

Despite missing ace allrounder Washington Sundar due to injury, India have eight players- Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal,  Ravindra Jadeja, Saransh Jain, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar- who bat left-handed. 

Since Gautam Gambhir has been appointed the head coach, India have rigorously prioritised sandwiching left-handers in between right-handed batters, even continuing the trend for the Sri Lanka Tests. 

While the Shubman Gill-led outfit looks to bounce back in the WTC cycle by emerging victorious in Sri Lanka, will their strategy of selecting so many left-handers in the squad actually help them neutralise Prabath Jayasuriya, supposed to be the biggest Sri Lankan threat to them?

Why is Prabath Jayasuriya the biggest threat to Indian team?

Experienced spin bowler Prabath Jayasuriya has been the key to Sri Lanka's success, particularly at home. He has played 14 Test matches in Sri Lanka, scalping 96 wickets at an impressive average of 27.26. 

11 of Prabath Jayasuriya's 12 five-wicket hauls have come in Sri Lanka, where the pitches are heavily conducive to spin bowling. Furthermore, he has bagged all his 96 home Test wickets at the Galle International Stadium and the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, where India will play the Tests on their 2026 tour to the Island Nation. 

Since making his debut in international cricket, Prabath Jayasuriya has accounted for 33.17 per cent of dismissals for Sri Lanka in won Tests at home. Usually, anyone would expect a left-arm off-spinner to dominate right-handed batters. 

But contrary to the popular belief, Prabath has done better against left-handers, a fact which makes him a potent threat to the Indian batting unit, likely to comprise at least six left-handers in the playing XI.

The data presented in the above table shows that Prabath Jayasuriya has taken fewer deliveries to take a wicket against left-handers. Although he might be a bit expensive, Prabath's ability to make the left-handers fall into his trap establishes his stature as a potential wicket-taker against India's left-handers' heavy lineup.

What is India's blue print to counter the biggest Sri Lankan threat?

Although Prabath Jayasuriya has a better strike rate against left-handers than right-handers, India's first-choice left-handed batters- Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are capable enough to neutralise him.

As evidenced by the above stats, Rishabh Pant, as anyone would expect, has been India's most successful left-handed batter against left-arm off-spinners. His aggressive intent, proactive approach and tendency to dominate this particular spin type have worked wonders for Pant. 

While Pant will be tasked to keep Prabath under the pump with audacious stroke-play, Jaiswal and Jadeja can frustrate the Sri Lankan spinner with precise feet movement and calculated aggression. 

If not Prabath Jayasuriya, then who can trouble India?

Prabath Jayasuriya's stellar home record and performance against left-handers indeed present him as the most potent Sri Lankan threat to the Indian team. But as India's left-handed batters have done phenomenally well against left-arm spinners, Sri Lanka will need a second fiddle to disrupt the Indian batting lineup. 

One between Ramesh Mendis, Nishan Peiris and Tharindu Rathnayake could be the perfect bowling partner for Prabath Jayasuriya, as the Lankans gear up for the India series. 

While Ramesh Mendis is Sri Lanka's second most successful bowler after Jayasuriya in home Tests since the latter's debut, Peiris and Rathnayake have been impressive with their off-breaks. 

The Indian batters were troubled by Simon Harmer, who scripted South Africa's historic Test series victory in 2025. Harmer consistently outfoxed the Indian batters with his guile on spin friendly pitches, scalping 17 wickets in two Tests. 

So, although India, coached by Gautam Gambhir, seem prepared for Prabath Jayasuriya, they shouldn't underestimate right-arm off-spinners like Ramesh Mendis, Nishan Peiris and Tharindu Rathnayake, whom the Lankans can use as surprise packages in the home series.
