The Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) has finally come to an end, and fans witnessed another exciting season filled with thrilling contests and memorable performances.
Every one of the ten franchises fought hard throughout the tournament in their pursuit of the prestigious title. In the end, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) emerged as champions, lifting the trophy for the second time after a remarkable campaign.
While several teams enjoyed successful seasons, a few franchises struggled to meet expectations. As a result, questions are now being raised about the future of certain captains who were unable to guide their teams toward success.
Notably, leadership plays an important role in a tournament as competitive as the IPL. Therefore, franchises often take bold decisions when results do not go their way.
Let us take a look at three captains who could be released ahead of the next season following disappointing campaigns in IPL 2026.
IPL 2026 Captains Who Can Be Released
Hardik Pandya
When Mumbai Indians appointed Hardik Pandya as captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season, expectations were extremely high. He replaced one of the most successful captains in IPL history, Rohit Sharma, and was viewed as a long-term leader for the franchise.
However, things have not gone according to plan. In his first season as captain, Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table with only four wins from 14 matches.
The following season showed some improvement as Mumbai reached Qualifier 2 before suffering a defeat against Punjab Kings. As a result, many believed the team was finally moving in the right direction.
Unfortunately, IPL 2026 turned out to be another disappointing campaign. Mumbai Indians managed only four wins in 14 games and ended the season in ninth place. Over the last three seasons under Hardik's leadership, the franchise has failed to win a title despite retaining a strong core of players and investing heavily in experienced stars.

In addition, Hardik's personal performances failed to make a significant impact. The all-rounder scored only 206 runs and picked up four wickets in the 10 matches he played. Furthermore, he missed several games due to a back spasm, which affected the team's balance and consistency.
Meanwhile, discussions regarding a possible leadership change have gained momentum. Reports suggest that Mumbai Indians are seriously considering moving on from Hardik as captain.
Since the franchise is known for making tough decisions in pursuit of success, a major change ahead of IPL 2027 cannot be ruled out.

Axar Patel
Axar Patel entered IPL 2026 under pressure after being appointed Delhi Capitals captain before the IPL 2025 season. The franchise placed its trust in the experienced all-rounder, hoping he could guide the team toward its first IPL title.
However, the results have been far from encouraging. Delhi Capitals failed to reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons under Axar's leadership. Consequently, questions have emerged regarding both his captaincy and overall contribution to the team.
With the bat, Axar Patel struggled throughout the tournament. He scored only 100 runs across nine innings at a strike rate of 112.50. Notably, 56 of those runs came in a single innings, which means he managed only 44 runs across his remaining eight knocks despite batting regularly in the top order.
His bowling performances also failed to dominate games. The left-arm spinner bowled just 36 overs in 12 matches and took 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.08. Moreover, he often faced criticism for not utilizing himself enough during important moments of matches.

As Delhi Capitals battled to keep their playoff hopes alive, finishing at no 5 with 7 wins and 6 losses, many observers questioned several tactical decisions made by the captain.
Notably, leadership often demands quick thinking and aggressive decision-making. Unfortunately, Axar struggled to consistently provide those qualities.
Adding to the uncertainty, a recent PTI report suggested that Delhi Capitals might opt for a new captain and management structure moving forward. Since the franchise continues to chase its maiden IPL trophy, the owners could decide that a fresh approach is needed.
Therefore, Axar Patel's future as captain remains uncertain heading into the next season.
Ajinkya Rahane
Kolkata Knight Riders entered IPL 2026 looking to rebuild after a period of inconsistency. Following the release of Shreyas Iyer, the franchise handed the captaincy responsibility to Ajinkya Rahane, an experienced leader with previous IPL captaincy experience.
Notably, Rahane was expected to bring stability and calmness to the side. However, the season did not unfold as planned.
After winning the IPL title in 2024, KKR struggled to maintain their momentum in the following seasons. In IPL 2025, they finished eighth on the points table. The challenges continued in IPL 2026 as the team ended its campaign in seventh place with 13 points from 14 matches.

Their final match of the season ended in disappointment as they suffered their seventh defeat of the tournament against Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens.
Apart from the team's results, Rahane's captaincy also came under scrutiny. Many critics felt that he was slow in making important tactical decisions on the field. In a format where games can change within a few overs, delayed decisions often prove costly.
His batting performances also attracted criticism throughout the season. Notably, modern T20 cricket demands aggressive scoring, especially from top-order batters. While several openers maintained strike rates close to 200, Ajinkya Rahane finished IPL 2026 with a strike rate of 135.08.
The veteran batter scored 335 runs in 14 innings at an average of 25.76 and registered only two half-centuries during the campaign. Although these numbers are respectable, they fell short of the standards expected from a captain leading a title-contending side.
His overall captaincy record also raises concerns. Across 27 matches as IPL captain, Rahane has won only 10 games while losing 14. Two matches ended without a result, leaving him with a win percentage of just 37.03.
As a result, many believe KKR might explore alternative leadership options before the next season begins.
