Arguably England’s best white-ball player in the last decade, Tammy Beaumont is a talismanic opener and a match-winner for her team in the shorter formats of the game.
Born in Kent, she started playing domestic cricket in 2007 and that very same year was included in the England Development squad for the European Championship. Batting at 5, she struggled throughout the tournament and failed to make a name for herself. However, a series of good performances for Kent in the 2009 County season earned her a place in the England squad for the tour of West Indies.
Beaumont made her ODI debut in the first match of the series and contributed 14 runs as England lost the match by 40 runs.
She was made the captain of the England Women’s Academy side that toured Sri Lanka in 2014 and in UAE the following year. England won both the series, and Beaumont was praised for her innovative captaincy.
Following her stint with the Academy side, Beaumont was drafted into the squad for the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup. She was promoted as an opener by the then-head coach, Mark Robinson. She blossomed at the tournament, amassing 138 runs and picking up three 'Player of the Match' awards.
Her crowning moment came in the 2017 Women’s World Cup, where the opener was at her devastating best. She accumulated 410 runs in nine matches, including a match-winning century against South Africa in the semi-finals.
In the 2017 World Cup, she was involved in a 275-run partnership alongside Sarah Taylor- the highest stand for any wicket in the Women’s World Cup. Later, Beaumont was named in the 2017 ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year.
The following year, she recorded her maiden T20I hundred against South Africa in a tri-series competition. In March 201, Beaumont overtook Meg Lanning to become the new no.1 player in the ICC Women’s ODI rankings.
A stalwart of English cricket for the past decade, the dynamic right-handed opener started her journey as a middle-order batter, but it was at the top of the order where she really blossomed. That said, the English cricketer has been one of the most consistent players for the national team, with the ability to raise her game in crunch matches, making her a special player.
