A teenage prodigy, Kerr caught the eyes of the people at a very young age, when one of her bowling videos surfaced on YouTube. The potential was clear and the New Zealand board wasted no time in fast-tracking the young leg-spinner.
She made her ODI debut against Pakistan Women’s side in the year 2016 and took a solitary wicket as New Zealand won the game comfortably in the end. She played in four matches and took 6 wickets in the series and was impressive with his variations.
Kerr’s best performance with the ball came against arch-rivals, Australia. In only her second ODI against them, Kerr took 4 wickets, and even though New Zealand lost the match, the leg-spinner announced herself to the world with a sensational display of spin bowling.
Kerr’s crowning moment came in 2018 in an ODI against Ireland, where she broke former Australia captain, Belinda Clark’s record 21-year-old record of the highest-individual score in Women’s ODI. Kerr slammed an unbeaten 232, and at 17 years old, she became the youngest player-male or female-to score a double century in international cricket and went on to claim a five-wicket haul in the same match.
In 2019, she was named as the New Zealand Women’s ODI player of the year at the annual New Zealand cricket awards.
Touted as the future of New Zealand, Kerr has had a sensational few years in international cricket. Winning the ODI player of the year at a young age shows how much Kerr has progressed over the last few years.
