Pakistan is set to tour Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series beginning March 11, a contest that quietly carries significant rebuilding undertones. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has unveiled a revamped ODI squad, signalling transition, experimentation, and a forward-looking approach in white-ball cricket.
With Shaheen Afridi leading the side, the absence of established names like Babar Azam and Saim Ayub marks a bold shift. Several youngsters have been handed opportunities, but one name stands out, Shamyl Hussain, viewed as a potential replacement for Saim Ayub in Pakistan’s evolving ODI setup.
Shamyl Hussain: Pakistan’s Emerging Top-Order Talent
Shamyl Hussain, an Islamabad-born 21-year-old left-handed top-order batter, has recently made waves in Pakistan cricket with his tremendous batting. Shamyl Hussain was part of the Pakistan Shaheens squad that faced England Lions in Abu Dhabi in February, a clear signal that Pakistan cricket has been tracking his potential for the senior side.
Shamyl Hussain’s batting style is aggressive and commanding. He has a natural knack for taking control early in an innings as the left-hander attacks deliveries square on both sides of the wicket, using a slight bend before launching powerful strokes. His strong leverage allows him to dominate spinners straightaway, maintaining intent and confidence at the crease.
Following the underwhelming returns from Saim Ayub, Shamyl Hussain is expected to step into that same top-order role. His fearless approach, strong technique, and attacking mindset make him a candidate to become Pakistan’s go-to top-order batter, capable of setting the tone in ODIs while providing the spark the team needs at the top.

Shamyl Hussain’s Domestic Performances
Shamyl Hussain has been part of Pakistan cricket since his U16 days, first grabbing headlines with a scintillating 67 off 34 balls in the Pakistan Junior League final in 2022. He later represented Pakistan U19, including the 2024 U19 World Cup, quietly building experience while remaining under the radar of senior selectors.
He was also part of the Islamabad United PSL-winning side in 2024 and went on to make his senior List A and First-Class debuts the same year. These early senior experiences laid the groundwork, giving him exposure to higher-level bowling attacks and conditions, preparing him for the breakthrough performances that would follow in the 2025-26 domestic season.
The 2025-26 season marked Shamyl’s arrival in force. In the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he scored 899 runs at 64.21 with three centuries and five fifties, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer for Islamabad Region. He carried that form into List A cricket, amassing 452 runs at 56.50 with two centuries and three fifties, earning a Pakistan Shaheens call-up and maiden ODI selection.

Pakistan to Take on Bangladesh: Shamyl Hussain Ready to Make His Mark
Since the Pakistan ODI squad was unveiled, there has been chatter about Shamyl Hussain entering the side without experience, but that’s far from the truth. He has traveled extensively with the Pakistan Shaheens since his U19 days, gaining exposure to international conditions and developing the temperament required for senior-level cricket.
Shamyl has often spoken of Babar Azam as an inspiration, learning from him during the domestic seasons and camps. Now, with his maiden ODI call-up against Bangladesh, he has the platform to translate domestic dominance and Shaheens experience into impactful international performances, making him a player to watch closely.
