Pakistan cricket has turned into a circus with a plethora of coaches already replaced in the last few years. Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten lasted a few months before they abruptly left their coaching role. Aaqib Javed couldn’t do much after them, as the Test coaching role was left wide open.

The position was left vacant since October 2025, and in a desperate move, the Mohsin Naqvi led panel revealed Sarfaraz Ahmed, the former Pakistan captain as the coach of the Test side.

Yousuf takes dig at PCB after Sarfaraz Ahmed's appointment

A formal announcement will be made soon by the PCB, but with so many coaches appointed in the last couple of years, stability has become a major issue in Pakistan cricket. Sarfaraz has the pedigree to deliver the goods for the nation, but it seems the former Pakistan cricketer, Mohammad Yousuf is not happy with his appointment.

In recent weeks, Yousuf has criticised the PCB for being incompetent, especially after their failure to deliver the T20 World Cup. The former cricketer congratulated Sarfaraz on his new role, but in a tweet that has gone viral, he has also criticised the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB for not having a long-term plan for Pakistan.

"Congratulations to Sarfraz Ahmed on his new role. But let’s be honest simply swapping names will not bring meaningful change. Real progress in Pakistan cricket will come only when the structure is revamped, the system is strengthened, and merit, transparency, and long-term planning are institutionalized. The issue has never been individuals alone, until the structure is reformed, leadership changes will remain cosmetic," Yousuf tweeted.

Why PCB appointed Sarfaraz Ahmed as the new Test coach

As a captain in his playing days, Sarfaraz was one of the shrewdest leaders and he was the last captain to have given Pakistan an ICC trophy (Champions Trophy 2017). Having led Pakistan to a successful stint as the leader, Sarfaraz shifted towards coaching youngsters.

Under his guidance, the Pakistan team won the Rising Stars Asia Cup by defeating arch-rivals, India. Currently, he is working with the Pakistan Shaheens, and the former ICC trophy winner has enough experience under his belt to take over the reigns of the Test team as head coach.

Plus, he has played Test cricket with some of the current players, and he knows the PCB setup inside-out, a move that could pay dividends for the team.

The massive task that Sarfaraz faces ahead

A formal announcement is pending, but Sarfaraz’s appointment is almost confirmed. However, the role of Pakistan’s Test head coach will come with its challenges for the former player. In the last WTC cycle, Pakistan endured a torrid time as the Shan Masood-led side finished in last position, as the team faced defeats in both home and away conditions.

The current WTC cycle started no differently, as Pakistan has played two Tests, having won one and lost one. They sit in fifth place, just one place above India, as Sarfaraz Ahmed faces a steep challenge to resurrect the Pakistan team, and help them become one of the best red-ball teams in the world.
