The Spain cricket team crushed Finland by eight wickets to continue their winning ways in T20Is. Chasing 132 runs for a win in the opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier C in Kerava, Spain mowed down Finland’s total with eight wickets and 20 balls to spare. 

In the process, the Spanish cricket team also set a huge world record, even surpassing Ricky Ponting’s pantheon from the year they won their second successive World Cup back in 2003.

Spain set world record for longest winning streak

The Spain cricket team started off the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier C with a comprehensive win in Kerava. The outcome marked Spain’s 21st successive win in international cricket, beginning the streak way back in February 2023 against the Isle of Man in Cartagena.

Recording 21 wins on the trot, Spain has now gone past Australia in terms of notching up most successive wins across all formats in international cricket. Australia, under the leadership of Ricky Ponting, formed the streak between January and May 2003. 

With Spain setting up the new world record for most successive wins, here is a look at the top five teams with the longest winning streak to their names in international cricket.

Most consecutive wins in international cricket

1.  Spain - 21 wins (February 2023 to August 2026)
2. Australia - 20 wins (January 2003 to May 2003)
3. Uganda - 17 wins (October 2024 to July 2025)
4. Australia - 16 wins (November 2000 to February 2001)
5. Australia - 16 wins (October 2006 to January 2007)

When Australia secured 20 successive wins

Australia notched up 20 wins in a row in early 2003 to claim the world record of securing most successive wins, thus marking a record that would stand strong for over two decades.

During the four-month period between January and May 2003, Australia won six matches in a row to close off their victorious VB tri-series at home, before bulldozing all their opponents 11 times in a row to clinch the 2003 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa. 

Soon after the World Cup, Ricky Ponting’s troops also pulverised West Indies in each of their first three Tests of the away tour of the Caribbean. Moreover, it took a world record chase from hosts West Indies in the fourth Test of the series to halt Australia’s unbeaten run. 

While Australia’s winning streak involved 17 ODI matches and three away Tests, the Spain cricket team notched up all their 21 successive wins while playing T20Is alone. It is worth noting that Spain is yet to play a single ODI match and they received their full T20I status only in 2019.  

Spain level Australia for another record

Apart from going past Australia for a huge world record, Spain also levelled up with the most decorated team in history for another rare milestone in international cricket. 

With Spain notching up 21 wins in a row in T20Is between February 2023 and August 2026, they have now registered the joint-highest number of successive wins in any single format.

Much like Spain, the Ricky Ponting-led Australian side also won 21 matches in a row in early 2003, albeit in ODIs. The team won 11 of those matches to lift the 2003 World Cup unbeaten in South Africa.
