In a significant development, India fielded its playing XI for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, with Sarfaraz Khan missing out despite earning a recall to the Test squad after a lengthy absence.
The 28-year-old had returned to the Indian setup as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan, but the team management opted against giving him an immediate comeback.
India has instead gone in with both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel, meaning the Playing XI features two wicketkeeper-batters. While the inclusion remains batting-heavy, Sarfaraz Khan’s exclusion angered the internet, with questions being raised against the BCCI.
Sarfaraz Khan Misses Out Despite Solid Track Record
Sarfaraz's return to the Indian Test squad was scripted after a strong run in the Ranji Trophy, establishing him as one of the more experienced red-ball batters in India's domestic circuit.
He averaged 53.63 in the recent Ranji season, and that record became particularly important when Sai Sudharsan was ruled out, with Sarfaraz being brought into the squad as his replacement.
There was, therefore, an expectation that Sarfaraz would at least be considered seriously for a place in the Playing XI.
The Mumbai batter last represented India in a Test match in 2024 against New Zealand. His international career subsequently stalled following a combination of inconsistent returns, questions about his fitness, and uncertainty about his place in the team's long-term plans.

Sarfaraz, however, did not allow that setback to derail his red-ball career. He went back to domestic cricket, worked on his fitness and continued to build a substantial body of work in first-class cricket.
Given his domestic form and previous international experience, there was a strong belief that Sarfaraz could walk straight into India's Playing XI. Instead, the team management chose a different combination.

Sarfaraz Khan's omission from India's Playing XI did not go down well with a section of cricket fans on social media. The biggest question raised was: if Sarfaraz had been recalled after a strong domestic season, why was he not considered for the first Test?

Why Dhruv Jurel Has Been Backed Over Sarfaraz Khan?
The biggest clue behind Sarfaraz's omission came before the first Test itself. India bowling coach Morne Morkel had already indicated that Sarfaraz's place in the Playing XI was not guaranteed.
The team management wanted to explore different combinations before deciding on the best possible XI for the conditions in Sri Lanka. That eventually resulted in Dhruv Jurel getting the nod.
Jurel's Test batting average currently stands at 34.14 from 10 matches, and his numbers have dipped at various stages of his international career. Therefore, his selection cannot simply be explained by superior batting statistics. Instead, it is the overall package that appears to have worked in his favour.
His 90 in Ranchi remains an important moment in his young Test career. Jurel produced that innings when India were in serious trouble at 177/7 and subsequently played another crucial unbeaten knock during the chase.
Jurel has also remained closer to the Indian Test setup in recent times, giving him greater familiarity with the team's systems, coaching staff and other players. That continuity can be important when a team is trying to find the right combination to handle challenging overseas conditions.
Will Sarfaraz Khan Make It To The Playing XI For Next IND vs SL Test Match?
Sarfaraz's chances of featuring in the second Test against Sri Lanka now look increasingly difficult. The first Test was perhaps his clearest opportunity to reclaim his place in India's Test setup immediately.
Had the team management wanted him to be a major part of the plans for the Sri Lanka series, Galle would have been the most logical point to give him a comeback. Instead, Sarfaraz Khan has started the tour as a reserve option.
For him to enter the Playing XI, India would now need to alter the combination that they have trusted for the series opener. An injury to either Rishabh Pant or Dhruv Jurel could create an opening, while a change in India's batting strategy could also bring Sarfaraz into consideration.
Without such a development, however, it will be difficult for the Mumbai batter to break into the XI.
