Travis Head was left shell-shocked in Darwin on Day 3 of Australia’s Test against Bangladesh. He chopped the ball onto the stumps on a Hasan Mahmud delivery, putting Australia in deep trouble.

In what looks like an unprecedented event, Bangladesh are all over the hosts in Darwin. Eyeing their first away victory over the giants, Bangladesh took a 228-run lead in the first innings. To make matters worse, both Aussie openers were out cheaply again in the second innings, and Travis Head’s reaction summed up the situation from Australia's perspective.

The incident happened at the 10.2-over mark of Australia’s second innings, when Travis Head was facing Hasan Mahmud after the bowler’s first-innings masterclass. Head tried to cut away the good-length delivery through the square, but the ball wasn’t short enough, and he ended up chopping it onto the stumps.

This is the second time this has happened for Head in the match against Mahmud. He was dismissed in the exact fashion for 22(39) on Day 1, which left him astounded by what was happening. He stood on his hunches for a couple of seconds and went on to set the bails back onto the stumps.

Why was Head’s reaction shocking?

Throughout the last few years, Head has been dominating opposition at will. T20 World Champions India and even England have faced the brunt of his sheer excellence, especially in Tests. He is also the Allan Border Medal recipient for two consecutive years.

On most occasions, batters are left frustrated after getting dismissed, and they even feel like hitting the stumps with their bat. But getting done by Hasan Mahmud in the same way twice within three days got Head thinking: how could this be happening to him? Hence, he pulled out the move to place the bails back on the stumps in disbelief.

This is such a rare sighting that the Australian legend in the commentary box, Adam Gilchrist, admitted to having never seen someone act like this after the wicket.

“I've never seen that in all my cricketing career,” said Adam Gilchrist on air.

Is Head’s form a concern for Australia?

The dangerous left-hand batter moved to the top of the batting lineup during the recent Ashes series at home, replacing the retiring Usman Khawaja. He did not disappoint in the series and racked up 629 runs at an average of 62.90 to help his team win.

However, since then, his form has been topsy-turvy. He only scored 111 runs in 4 innings of the T20 World Cup, as Australia crashed out of the competition and scored 22 and 17 against Bangladesh in the ongoing Test.

While he fared decently during the IPL, scoring 410 runs in 15 innings at 170.12, it was still just a decent season for the standards he has set.

His form will be extremely important for them moving ahead in the WTC 2025-27 cycle, as they face South Africa away and New Zealand at home in the coming months.
