Rain came out of nowhere in Galle, ruining the mood on Saturday (August 15) during the India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. As a result, the lunch break on Day 1 will likely be extended until the weather and outfield conditions allow them to resume action.
Galle International Stadium was scheduled to host the first Test between India and Sri Lanka, which only began on Saturday. Unfortunately, despite India’s solid start, with the scoreboard reading 101/1, the officials had no choice but to wait further after seeing rait hit hard at the venue.
At that point, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal were on the crease, on 32* and 35* respectively, while Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the pavilion despite a solid start following an unfortunate run-out.
Galle Weather Update Amid Day 1 Of IND vs SL 1st Test
As AccuWeather suggests, Galle currently has 83% humidity, which is dangerously high. There is 25% cloud coverage, although the probability of rain came down to 25% during the afternoon.
So, it can be safe to say that there should not be much of a delay for the IND vs SL 1st Test resumption, even though current visuals do not look too promising.

Moreover, there is a chance of rain in Galle from Saturday night until Sunday morning. Therefore, don’t be surprised if IND vs SL 1st Test Day 2 gets a delayed start.

This was the 50th Test match in Galle. Of them, seven Tests ended in a draw, mainly due to rain interruptions apart from batting brilliance.
So, it is safe to say that rain did not have much impact on the boring results in Galle. In fact, Sri Lanka have won 27 out of 50 Test matches at this venue, while the opposition have had the last laugh on 15 occasions.
So, bowlers majorly enjoy Test matches in Galle, especially the spinners. So, results are often produced here instead of draws.
Why India Are Worried About Galle Rain?
Team India, under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, are already having a rough time in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC). They have had four defeats and four wins so far in the ongoing 2026-27 cycle.
With the PCT of 48.15, India are fifth on the WTC points table. Bangladesh, who have been thrashing table-toppers Australia from left to right in their own backyard, are fourth with the PCT of 58.33.
If India still have ambitions to reach the WTC final this time around, they can’t afford any point losses from here on. Therefore, the Galle rain has kept them worried.
After the Galle Test, India and Sri Lanka will play the second Test of the two-match series at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo from August 23 onwards.
Update: as of 12:40 IST, rain has stopped in Galle, and on-field umpires are having a look at when can they resume IND vs SL 1st Test, keeping the outfield conditions in mind.
